Summary

  • Atlus is targeting a 2025 release date for Persona 6, which may disappoint fans hoping for an earlier release, but they have other games lined up for 2024.
  • Persona fans can expect Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5: The Phantom X to be released in 2024, with another unannounced game, codenamed "Asa," potentially arriving as well.
  • Atlus is also planning a new IP called Metaphor: ReFantazio, a fantasy RPG developed by the same team behind Persona 5. Additionally, Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord will be released in 2024.

With 2024 on the horizon, Atlus has yet to announce the next installment in its popular Persona franchise. The most recent mainline entry in the series is the wildly successful Persona 5, which released worldwide in 2017, with the expanded version, Persona 5 Royal, arriving in 2019.

According to a recent leak, Atlus is targeting a 2025 release date for Persona 6. This might disappoint fans who were hoping that Persona 6 would arrive before then, but this doesn't mean 2024 is going to be a dry year for the developer. One could even argue that Atlus has a fairly beefy lineup for 2024, as evidenced by currently available information.

  • Persona 3 Reload (February 2 on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC)
  • Unicorn Overlord (March 8 on Switch, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox Series)
  • Persona 5: The Phantom X (Date unconfirmed on mobile devices and PC)
  • Metaphor: ReFantazio (Date unconfirmed on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series, and PC)
  • Codename "Asa" (Rumored, platforms unknown)

Unicorn Overlord is being developed by Vanillaware. It will be published by Atlus in Japan and Sega everywhere else. Likewise, it is unknown yet if Phantom X will have an international release.

Confirmed 2024 Persona Games

Persona fans have at least 2 games to look forward to in 2024. The first of these is Persona 3: Reload. It will launch relatively early in the year. It has been slated for a February 2 release. The other title that is expected to release in 2024 is a Persona 5 spinoff titled The Phantom X. While the latter title does not have a solid release date, Atlus insider Midori (the same person that revealed the targeted release window for Persona 6) has said that The Phantom X is targeting a 2024 release date. It is being developed for mobile platforms and PC.

Persona 3: Reload and Persona 5: The Phantom X might not be the only titles Persona fans have to look forward to in 2024. According to Midori, there is yet another unannounced Persona game arriving in 2024, a party game codenamed "Asa." There has been no official word from Atlus to confirm or deny such a game is in development, but if it is, it will likely be announced in the next few months.

That's Not All Atlus Has Planned For 2024

Metaphor: ReFantazio What It Means For Persona 6

Persona is not the only franchise in Atlus' stable for 2024. Fans can also look forward to a new IP called Metaphor: ReFantazio, a dramatic fantasy RPG that bears a striking resemblance to Persona 5. This game does not have a specific release date as yet, but it has been confirmed for 2024.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is being worked on by the director, character designer, and composer behind Persona 5; Katsura Hashino, Shigenori Soejima, and Shoji Meguro respectively. The medieval fantasy setting seems to be a great canvas for Hashino and company to flex their collective creative muscle on, so it could scratch the Persona itch pending the release of the next mainline entry into the series. Metaphor: ReFantazio is being developed for PlayStation, Xbox Series, and PC.

A Tactical Alliance

Atlus Stacked 2024 Unicorn Overlord

Another game Atlus fans should keep an eye on is Unicorn Overlord, also arriving in 2024. While this isn't an Atlus title per se, it is being developed by Vanillaware, the company headed by ex-Atlus developer George Kamitani. Kamitani parted ways with Atlus after the commercial failure of a title called Princess Crown released in 1997 on Sega Saturn, and eventually went on to form Vanillaware, which has created some successful titles published by Atlus. Examples include Dragon's Crown and the successful 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

Unicorn Overlord will be releasing on March 8, 2024. It is being published by Atlus in Japan, while the worldwide release is being handled by parent company Sega. It is a tactical RPG that draws nonspecific inspiration from games in that genre from the '90s. According to Kamitani, Unicorn Overlord is the most ambitious project ever taken on by Vanillaware and is set to arrive on Switch, Xbox Series, and PlayStation consoles.
