There are a variety of terrifying challenges to embark on in Kinetic Games' Phasmophobia and some of them are designed to truly test the limits of your skills as a paranormal investigator. They place constraints on your equipment and augment ghost behavior often to extreme levels but the payoffs are usually more than worth it.

One such task in Phasmophobia is the Tortoise and the Hare: Tortoise Challenge. If you want to know how best to tackle this challenge and reap its rewards then you will need to how exactly how it works.

What is Challenge Mode in Phasmophobia?

phasmophobia-grafton-challenge-mode

Challenge Mode is a special weekly challenge in Phasmophobia that sends players on a unique contract to a specific location with a preset loadout. You cannot change the loadout in any way, and the challenge must be done at the location indicated on the board. You can view the current week's challenge at any time via the Main Menu board under the 'Weekly Tasks' column (as seen above) at the very bottom. Completing up to ten challenges will reward you with three different achievementsChallenger Approaching, Rise to the Challenge, and Taking All Challenges.

Each Challenge Mode rewards a base total of $5,000 on top of all other earnings from guessing the ghost, completing optional objectives, etc. It makes it one of the most lucrative tasks you can do in the game next to completing contracts on Insanity or Nightmare difficulty.

However, to fully satisfy Challenge Mode for the week and obtain those rewards, you must complete the prescribed contract three times. They do not need to be consecutive successes, but they must be done within the current week's time to count towards completion. Challenge Mode resets every Sunday along with all other Weekly Tasks, and there are over two dozen types of challenges, such as the Glow in the Dark Challenge.

To queue for the current Challenge Mode task, select either 'Singleplayer' or 'Multiplayer,' depending on whether you're choosing to do the challenge solo or with a party. Then, look for your 'Difficulty' setting and select it to go to your options. Scroll until you find the 'Challenge Mode' option, where you can see exactly what the challenge will be and your progress with it.

Press 'Apply' in the bottom right corner, and then pivot to the Locations board to your left to find the map specified in the challenge. Select it, then go back to the Main Menu. Since you cannot change your starting equipment for challenges, your loadout menu will instead indicate that "a challenge-specific loadout is provided at no cost," so at that point, you're ready to travel to the contract.

How to Complete Tortoise and the Hare: Tortoise Challenge in Phasmophobia

The Tortoise and the Hare: Tortoise Challenge in Phasmophobia is a significantly difficult challenge situated on the Grafton Farmhouse map. To receive full credit, you must complete the challenge three times exclusively on this map.

It's also special challenge because its parameters are directly opposite of the Tortoise and the Hare: Hare Challenge (they're essentially a pair like certain other challenges in the game). This challenge also canonically follows the 'Hare' version, per the official description. The game describes the challenge as follows: "After last week you're feeling a bit worn out, and to make matters worse, the ghost has recovered!".

In other words, this challenge puts you at an inherent disadvantage by crippling your character's movement speed, knocking it down to 75% of your normal speed. Meanwhile, the ghost will have a staggering 150% movement speed, making it significantly faster than usual. Keep in mind that this means, for this challenge, you can't rely on a ghost's movement speed to identify it.

To compromise, hunt durations in this challenge are shorter than usual. However, if a player is killed during the hunt, the duration will likely increase. Chain kills are also a possibility in this challenge, so if you're playing with a group, it's highly recommended to keep distance between each other, especially during hunts. Otherwise the ghost can kill everyone in close proximity.

The ghost also has a high probability of changing its favorite room in this challenge, akin to Professional Mode or higher. So if it seems like the ghost is not producing activity in its room after a certain amount of time, check the rooms/areas adjacent in case it's decided to move. To make things all the more difficult, most of the doors in Grafton Farmhouse will start open, meaning you can't use that as an early sign of the ghost's location. However, the ghost's overall activity will still be higher than normal, so finding it through other means of activity will still be manageable enough.

In terms of the loadout you're provided, it's all Tier 2 equipment across the board. The only thing missing is two Firelights, presumably to make it harder to retain sanity. You also cannot test for an Onyro ghost as you need three Firelights to do so.

One Cursed Object will also randomly spawn somewhere on the map, and if you want to consider using it, you'll need to find it. Finally, the Breaker (or Fusebox) will start off each time during this challenge, but you can turn it on to use the lights around the map.

Use everything at your disposal carefully and, if possible, complete this challenge with a group to help ferry equipment into the farmhouse more quickly. Friends can also help you figure out the ghost's identity more easily and act as a safeguard in case someone is killed.
