Summary
- "The Unholy Trinity" has a 17% Rotten Tomatoes rating and mixed audience reviews
- Some fans praised the movie's actors, cinematography, while critics found plot lacking
- Director Richard Gray tackled the Western genre and praised the skills of Brosnan and Jackson.
Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson are starring in a Western movie that has gotten people talking, but while audiences have responded one way, critics have had the opposite reaction.
Although Brosnan is, of course, known for portraying James Bond, he's been busy recently, and fans can look forward to watching him in the Netflix mystery Thursday Murder Club. Jackson is playing the President in the upcoming action film The Beast and also starring alongside Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell in a J.J. Abrams film. While fans are always watching the two actors' careers to see what interesting projects they've chosen, all eyes are on their Western that is currently in theaters. Although sometimes fans and critics love the same movie, or they're both critical of certain elements, it's always fascinating when a popular film has a low Rotten Tomatoes score. In the case of this particular movie, audiences and critics aren't on the same page.

Fans And Critics Can't Agree On Pierce Brosnan And Samuel L. Jackson's The Unholy Trinity
Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson are starring in The Unholy Trinity, which has a 17% Rotten Tomatoes rating and 66% on the Popcornmeter. While critics have given the movie poor reviews so far, the audience comments on the website aren't as negative. Jackson plays St. Christopher and Brosnan plays Sheriff Gabriel Dove, and the movie is set in Montona in the 1870s.
While a space Western can stand out and tell a unique story, critics didn't feel that the plot of The Unholy Trinity was anything to write home about. Although the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes suggest that The Unholy Trinity is dull, disappointing, and not worth checking out, not every fan feels the same way. One fan wrote:
"Great story line, good actors, fit the characters perfectly, cinematography was excellent."
Another fan praised the actors and wrote, "If you like westerns, this one is decent. Samuel Jackson is amazing as always. Pierce Brosnan held his own, and it was nice to see him back on the big screen." Although others called it "boring" or were critical of the ending, audience reviews weren't as harsh. Many people consider it a middle-of-the-road and entertaining enough film.
The Unholy Trinity hasn't been a huge box office success, at least not at the time of this writing. According to Box Office Mojo, the film's worldwide gross is $559,610 so far.
Jackson's Western The Hateful Eight, which was directed by Quentin Tarantino, was much better received and is considered one of the most memorable Western movies released in the 21st century. There are also plenty of Westerns directed by Clint Eastwood and several Western animated shows that many would likely recommend over The Unholy Trinity.
Director Richard Gray came close to winning Project Greenlight Australia and, after several thrillers, decided to take on the Western genre. His previous movies include Murder at Yellowstone City, Broken Ghost, and Sugar Mountain. Gray told Film Review Daily that the genre is "cyclical" as Westerns are more popular at certain times and less beloved at others and gave Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan a shout-out. He also praised the acting talents of Brosnan and Jackson and said:
"It's great when you're talking to Pierce or Sam about a scene, and you've got your ideas, but usually their ideas are better. They'll take your ideas and try to do something with them... There's just an aura around those guys that's hard to properly explain when you're dealing with legends of cinema. It was just really exciting."
The Unholy Trinity was released on June 13th, 2025 and fans of Westerns can check it out and see if they agree with audiences or critics.
