Nintendo has implied that the “Close to You” short films were not teasers for a new Pikmin game or DLC. The Pikmin fanbase was hyped after the confirmation that the brief animated movie was related to the franchise, but it seems that it may be a while before a new game is announced, after all.
As soon as Nintendo released the “Close to You" short film, fans started speculating. The animated movie depicted a toddler whose pacifier is picked up by an invisible force while their mother is not around, and it quickly intrigued fans. Gamers came up with several theories, including that the toddler would be space princess Rosalina from the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but most believed that the video was a teaser for a new Pikmin game. Despite not having surface-level resemblances to the franchise, the short film did have musical cues from Pikmin. The following day, Nintendo revealed an updated version of the film, which had the Pikmin visible and showed them wreaking havoc around the house.

Nintendo Confirms 'Close to You' Short Film Was Not a Teaser
Unfortunately, while “Close to You” proved to be related to Pikmin, it seems that it was not a teaser for anything. Nintendo has revealed that the two short films were created by Nintendo Pictures and that the studio will “continue to explore new creative possibilities through video content.” This greatly indicates that the video was solely a proof of concept to demonstrate the studio’s talents, not a teaser for a new Pikmin game or DLC, as most fans expected.
While an actual Pikmin feature film made by Nintendo Pictures may be released sometime in the future, this is still a very disappointing ending to a hyped situation. Pikmin 4 was a big hit, selling three million copies and becoming the most popular game in the franchise, so there were expectations that Nintendo would at least support it with DLC.
In any case, 2025 may not be over for Pikmin fans just yet. While it seems guaranteed that a new entry in the series is not coming out soon, recent rumors have indicated that Pikmin 4 could receive a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade. It’s been around three months since the rumors first started, but there’s still hope that gamers may soon be able to play an upgraded version of the popular real-time strategy title before the end of the year and, hopefully, a sequel later down the line.
