The top 20 all-time best-selling games for PlayStation consoles in the United States were just shared, and Call of Duty and Rockstar Games completely dominated the charts. Minecraft, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Red Dead Redemption 2 were all heavy-hitters, with Grand Theft Auto 5 standing at the top as having made more money and sold more units on PlayStation than any other game.
On September 9, 1995, Sony entered the console war in North America by releasing the PlayStation. This revolutionary piece of hardware introduced a new paradigm in the industry and would establish PlayStation as a cornerstone of gaming worldwide, with a total of four more mainline consoles releasing over the next three decades, not including handhelds like the PSP.

Now, in honor of the console’s big anniversary, Circana has revealed the bestsellers from the console series over the last 30 years. A new list shared by Circana senior director and video game industry thought leader Mat Piscatella on Bluesky shows the top 20 best-selling PlayStation console games in the United States, both by dollars made and units sold. Grand Theft Auto 5 stands tall at the top of both lists, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare being the second-highest-grossing game, and Minecraft as the second-best seller. Red Dead Redemption 2 claimed the number three spot on both lists.

Notably, these lists are dominated by the Call of Duty franchise and Rockstar titles, with 28 of the 40 entries belonging to these series. Minecraft, Marvel’s Spider-Man 1, 2, and Miles Morales, The Last of Us, God of War (2018), Rainbow Six: Siege, and Skyrim are the only games that broke this trend – and even then, only Minecraft was able to land a spot in the top five of either list.
Piscatella also shared a similar list specific to Playstation 1 games that held their own back in their day. Gran Turismo 1 and 2 dominated the top, though Final Fantasy 7 and Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 also did quite well. Other highlights from this list include Tekken 3, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, Spyro, Metal Gear Solid, and the 1997 3D Frogger game.

Judging from these lists, it is no exaggeration to say that Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto are some of the most popular game series out there. Both franchises are getting new entries soon, with Call of Duty Black Ops 7 releasing on November 14, and Grand Theft Auto 6 dropping on May 26 of next year. It would not be a surprise to see these games break into the top 20 list, but fans will have to wait and see how high they are able to climb.
