It's just been announced that Skate Story is coming to PlayStation Plus when it launches on December 8. It was recently confirmed that PlayStation Plus is losing at least nine games this December, including Forspoken, Battlefield 2042, and Sonic Frontiers, but the addition of Skate Story as a day-one title does help to soften the blow.
Being developed by Sam Eng, Skate Story was first unveiled properly during Devolver Digital's holiday event in December 2022. Since then, Skate Story has garnered a great deal of anticipation, with its fluid skateboarding mechanics, distinct art style, and demonic premise being on full display for the 50,000+ participants of the game's recent Steam demo.
Skate Story Heads to PlayStation Plus and Extra on December 8
Confirmed via a PlayStation Blog post on November 24, Skate Story is heading to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium on its December 8 launch date. Skate Story is a third-person skateboarding game that will see players take control of a demon who has been given a skateboard from the Devil himself as part of a devious deal; if the demon can ride the skateboard all the way to the moon and swallow it whole, the Devil will free them from their eternity of servitude. That mission will take players throughout the nine circles of the underworld, where they'll meet a bizarre cast of unlikely allies and hostile demons looking to bring their journey to an untimely end.
While the general moment-to-moment gameplay of Skate Story will see players engaging in missions with a clear set of objectives, such as performing tricks over certain parts of the scenery, the game will also feature boss fights that challenge the player to perform specific combos in quick succession. Between missions and boss fights, players will find themselves in Skate Story's hub, where they can unlock new tricks, new gear, and customize their skateboard with a range of unique designs and stickers.
Though early versions of Skate Story first appeared in YouTube trailers all the way back in 2020, it started to receive a lot of mainstream attention last year following a playable demo at Summer Game Fest and Tribeca Games Festival. IGN's Charlie Wacholz wrote that Skate Story "shot up to the top of [their] Steam wishlist after [their] hands-on demo" at SGF 2024, and Rock Paper Shotgun's Brendan Caldwell said the game "looks like a piece of modern art" following their preview. Fans will need to wait just a few more weeks to find out if Skate Story lives up to the hype, but those with PlayStation Plus will be able to find out for free.
