Ghost of Yotei is currently at the top of the PlayStation Store pre-order charts in the US and UK. Sucker Punch officially revealed the upcoming sequel to the 2020 open-world action title Ghost of Tsushima back in September 2024, confirming that it will have both a new name and a new central protagonist. Taking place 300 years after the events of the first game, Ghost of Yotei follows Atsu, who embarks on a mission to avenge the murder of her family by hunting the people responsible across Japan’s northern Enzo region.
Fans of the original Ghost of Tsushima got another look at Ghost of Yotei last month, along with an official release date of October 2. Much of the classic action and stealth gameplay that made Ghost of Tsushima a hit will be retained in Ghost of Yotei, with Atsu shown cutting down enemies using the same katana that pinned her to a tree as the sinister Yotei Six burned down her home. Ghost of Yotei will also take advantage of its new time period by giving Astu a matchlock rifle to shoot at foes from a distance.
Ghost of Yotei Continues a Trend The Series Should Eventually Break
Ghost of Yotei's narrative continues a trend that was ignited by its predecessor, and it's one that the next game in the series should steer clear of.
Gamers are excited to see more of the new direction that Sucker Punch is taking with Ghost of Yotei, at least according to the high number of pre-orders already in the books. Ghost of Yotei is currently at the very top of the PlayStation Store pre-order charts in the US, UK, and other territories (as reported by PushSquare), with the $80 Deluxe Edition ranking slightly higher than the vanilla $70 version. Pre-orders for Ghost of Yotei started late last week, roughly six months away from its October 2 launch on the PlayStation 5.
Ghost of Yotei Tops PlayStation Store Pre-Order Chart
Ghost of Tsushima was already a blockbuster success for the PlayStation 4, with an updated PS5 version released in 2021 and a PC port launching in 2024. A live-action Ghost of Tsushima movie by John Wick director Chad Stahelski is in development from Sony, as is an anime inspired by the game’s online multiplayer mode Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
This success is already spreading to Ghost of Yotei, with many players already pre-ordering the next chapter in Sucker Punch’s open-world samurai series. Ghost of Yotei will depart from its predecessor in many ways, such as having a non-linear story campaign. Former PlayStation and Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida recently praised Ghost of Yotei for providing a smooth and bug-free gameplay experience and expressed excitement to see the full game once it launches this fall.
