PlayStation 5 has a striking design that is vastly different from the other PlayStation consoles. Many users were likely surprised at the default color of the PS5 console and the DualSense controller when it was first revealed. Some fans wanted Sony to release new colors for the system, and their wishes were granted not long after the console’s launch.
Sony revealed new colors for the PS5 console and DualSense controller last December. While these are not custom-designed consoles, PS5 owners can swap the system’s faceplate to give it a fresh look. Sony announced five colors under the PS5 Console Covers category, with Midnight Black and Cosmic Red launching in January 2022. Sony mentioned that the remaining three colors would be available in the year’s first half, and fans now have a release window for these faceplates.
PS5 Console Covers in Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, and Nova Pink will launch next month in select regions. Fans in the US, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg get early access to these covers starting June 17. Customers from these regions can go to the PlayStation Direct website to place their orders.
Sony states that replacing the white cover is reasonably straightforward, as users need to simply remove the original cover and attach the new one into its place. Interested users can look at the PS5 teardown video for more information on removing the cover. They should also note that the digital and standard editions of the PS5 console have different covers.
The DualSense controller is available in the same colors, although the release schedule differed. Midnight Black and Cosmic Red were launched in June 2021, while Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple were released in January 2022. Additionally, the latter three DualSense colors reportedly come with improved parts to prevent stick drift. Newer versions of the older DualSense colors are also available, and users will have to check a code at the back of the controller to verify that it has the new parts.
The PS5 covers change the color of the faceplate, but Sony has yet to reveal a special edition console. PS4 and PS4 Pro received several custom-made consoles over their lifespan that were designed around marquee games such as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, God of War, and Marvel's Spider-Man. Sony also released some limited-edition consoles for noteworthy events, such as PlayStation’s 20-year anniversary and for when PlayStation consoles sales crossed 500 million.
