Today’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer contained many fun Easter Eggs for fans of various Spidey-related media, including a quick cameo from the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 incarnation of Peter Parker. Across the Spider-Verse will continue the story of Miles Morales as he travels to different dimensions across the Marvel multiverse and meets other versions of the famed web-slinging crime fighter from various Marvel-based video games and comics. This time, Miles will also have to battle the dimension-warping villain The Spot, and the early trailers for Across the Spider-Verse hint at a conflict between the rookie Spider-Man and the countless other wall-crawlers of the multiverse.Eagle-eyed fans have quickly noticed guest appearances from several past Spider-Man media in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailers, including Peter Parker’s low-polygon self from the classic PlayStation Spider-Man game. Many of the alternate Spideys shown are already featured as unlockable costumes in 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, including the cel-shaded Peter B. Parker from the previous Into the Spider-Verse film. In return, Peter’s Advanced Suit from Marvel’s Spider-Man can be seen hanging in Spider-Man’s base in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it looks like the PS4 version of the classic hero is appearing in the flesh in the upcoming sequel. Fans have already spotted the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 incarnation of Peter Parker strolling across the many multiverse Spideys for a brief moment in last year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse teaser, and it seems that’s not the only cameo he has. Not too long after the latest Across the Spider-Verse trailer was released, Twitter user Rock Rìder pointed out that the PlayStation-based Spider-Man can be spotted during a humorous recreation of the classic “pointing Spider-Man” meme towards the end.
The appearance of the Marvel’s Spider-Man version of Peter in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse couldn’t have come at a better time, as Insomniac is set to release Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on the PlayStation 5 later this year. While it isn’t yet clear if the multiverse will play a role in this upcoming Spidey tale, both Peter Parker and Miles Morales will be featured as they face off against the fearsome Venom. An action figure description from the Marvel Legends Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Miles Morales figure implied that the game version of Miles shared his animated counterpart’s interdimensional adventures, but this was later confirmed to be a mistake.
In any case, Spider-Man fans are certainly in for an exciting 2023 thanks to the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on June 2, followed by the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 later in the year. Even before the game hits store shelves, players will be able to see more of the PlayStation take on Spidey in his quick cameo in Across the Spider-Verse, which confirms that the Insomniac Spidey indeed coexists with the many other web-swinging heroes of the multiverse - and hopefully sets up larger crossovers in the future.
