It's been quite some time since Sony last hosted a proper PlayStation State of Play. While the company did air a presentation centered around IO Interactive's upcoming James Bond game a few weeks ago, it only featured a single title, which wasn't even a PlayStation exclusive. The most recent of the regular State of Plays was aired in June 2025, just a few days before Summer Games Fest. Although it was relatively light on first-party content, it featured quite a lot of exciting games from third-party developers, including Nioh 3, Pragmata, Romeo is a Dead Man, and the PlayStation-published Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.

Sony hasn't officially revealed anything about the next State of Play yet, but if rumors are to be believed, it should be sharing some more news on the matter sooner rather than later. NateTheHate, the trustworthy insider who was the first to leak the announcement date for the Nintendo Switch 2 back in January, claimed on Twitter a few days ago that Sony would host a new PlayStation presentation sometime next week. Although it's not exactly clear what games will show up in this supposed State of Play, an announcement involving Santa Monica Studio's next project could make it truly memorable.

Santa Monica Studio Could Have a Major Presence at Next Week's Rumored State of Play

Cory Barlog, the director of the universally-acclaimed God of War (2018) reboot, has been working on a new project at Santa Monica Studio for quite a while. For many years, it was assumed that this mysterious game was a new IP set in a sci-fi universe, but this supposedly isn't the case. A few months ago, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier alleged that it wasn't actually a new IP, but was instead something that may "feel like one." While Barlog's new game may, therefore, be another God of War reboot, it's hard to make any definitive statements on the subject due to the limited information that's available.

In spite of Schreier's comments, multiple Santa Monica Studio employees have said on LinkedIn that they were recently involved with the development of a new IP at the company.

Santa Monica Studio is Likely Involved With Multiple God of War Projects

Even if the next project from Cory Barlog isn't a new installment in the God of War series, Santa Monica Studio is bound to be working on something God of War-related in the background. The franchise's most recent entry, God of War: Ragnarok, was launched in 2022, and although the studio did release a free DLC for it in 2023, it hasn't announced any new God of War games ever since. According to recent rumors, it appears that Mega Cat Studios, the makers of Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit, is working on a 2.5D God of War Metroidvania that's set in Ancient Greece. If this game actually exists, Santa Monica Studio's involvement with it is likely pretty limited, so the company probably has enough resources to develop a new mainline God of War game at the same time as Barlog's project.

The Reveal of a New Mainline God of War Game Would Make the Next State of Play an Unmissable One

It's only been a few years since the launch of God of War: Ragnarok, so most fans probably aren't expecting Santa Monica Studio to announce the next main installment in the God of War franchise at the rumored State of Play next week. That's why, if the game shows up there, it would likely be a big surprise to many viewers. The inclusion of a teaser trailer for the next big God of War game, along with a proper gameplay reveal for Marvel's Wolverine (as has been rumored by some insiders), would easily make this State of Play an event that'd go down in the gaming history books.

According to insiders like Tom Henderson and DanielRPK, the next mainline God of War game is going to take place in Ancient Egypt.

Bluepoint's Multiplayer God of War Game Obviously Won't Be at the State of Play

If there's one thing that fans shouldn't expect to see at the next State of Play, though, it's Bluepoint Games' live service God of War title. As crazy as it sounds, Bluepoint was apparently working on a multiplayer-only installment in Santa Monica Studios' long-running series, but it was abruptly canceled earlier this year alongside Bend Studios' new IP, perhaps because it might've failed to meet Sony's quality standards. At the very least, the God of War Metroidvania will likely be revealed here in some capacity instead.
