The Pokemon Company has released a new Cubone plush toy that includes a harrowing backstory. The Pokemon franchise has had Pikachu as the face of the company for two decades, but over the last few years, soft toys such as the Build-A-Bear Mimikyu have given rise to the lesser-known monsters within the franchise.
Pokemon soft toys have always been part and parcel of the franchise since the release of Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue on the original Game Boy. Most recently, The Pokemon Company announced a life-sized Slowpoke will be available to purchase from the Pokemon Center in Japan for around $337. In a more affordable announcement, another popular pocket monster from the Kanto region will see a release.
Ridiculous Pokemon GO Route Takes 7 Hours to Complete
One Pokemon GO trainer stumbles across an enormous route in their town that has a suggested completion time of over seven hours.
The monster in question is the Ground-type Cubone and forms part of the Pokemon Dreams collection on the official Pokemon Center US website. The 12-inch toy is up for order for $29.99 and is shown to be sleeping on its side while cuddling its bone weapon. While the shape of Cubone is utterly adorable and certainly one that fans will want to embrace, folks may notice the design includes a tear under one of the closed eyes. According to the description on the website, this is because Cubone goes to sleep every night dreaming about its mother.
The Pokemon series is known for including disturbing backstories for some of its monsters, such as the lore behind Phantump from Pokemon Sword and Shield. The stories detail that Phantump is created from the ghosts of children who had become lost in woodland areas. Cubone, whose inclusion came from the very first region, is arguably one of the saddest to date as the monster mourns the loss of its mother by wearing her skull to cover its face.
More Pokemon are expected to be revealed when part two of the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC is released in Winter 2023. It remains to be seen if The Indigo Disk add-on will feature any new Pokemon with unsettling backgrounds, but fans will undoubtedly embrace the new monsters.
Pokemon plush toys continue to be as popular as ever. One fan has already shown their appreciation of the latest generation of Pokemon by creating a charming plush of Palafin, the dolphin Water-type. With the series featuring over 1,000 monsters at this point, it remains to be seen which Pokemon will make the next collection.
