- Fan artist EliDwebster draws inspiration from real-world folklore for new Pokemon designs.
- Shiny versions and future Kalosian variants of custom Pokemon designs are speculated by fans.
Drowzee and its evolution have always been considered among the more eerie creatures in the Pokemon world due to their lore, but one artist from the community has reimagined these Pokemon as new regional variants complete with alternative appearances, types, abilities, and more. Despite being part of the Pokemon franchise since the original Gen 1 games, these Pokemon haven't seen any official new forms or variations across the years.
This has left the Drowzee family an ideal subject in various pieces of fan art, with many of the extremely talented artists within the Pokemon community often producing custom regional variants, Mega Pokemon, Paradox Pokemon and more of their own imagining. Such fan art tends to focus on the many critters in the Pokemon world who don't yet have many official variations in the games themselves. With there now being more than a thousand distinct species of Pokemon in the franchise, fans have had an excess of base material to work with when creating new designs.
January 3 Will Be a Big Day for Pokemon Masters EX
January 3 is going to be an exciting day for Pokemon Masters EX players as the game's first major event of the year takes shape.
Both Drowzee and Hypno are pure Psychic-type Pokemon by default, but some new artwork recently shared by a fan known as EliDwebster imagines these critters primarily as Ground-type regional variants instead. This artwork leaves the overall design of Drowzee quite recognizable, altering the creature's color to a mix of white and brown with red highlights across its body. The evolution of this design is a far cry in appearance from Hypno, however, with this Ground and Fairy-type variant taking the name Snootzee. Both of these designs pull strong inspiration from real-world folklore, with the Drowzee variant being largely based on the concept of a traditional mountain troll, but its Ground typing being based on its resemblance to the mountain tapir.
These Custom Pokemon Designs Dig Deep Into Real-World Mythology
Snootzee, on the other hand, is grounded more heavily in djinn folklore. The artist behind these designs has explained that it primarily takes inspiration from Jinn Al-Kaboo, which is associated heavily with causing nightmares and sleep paralysis in humans. This Snootzee would even make use of its own unofficial Pokemon signature move and ability. The move, Glimmering Dust, is an attack that has the chance to bestow a random stat buff on any sleeping Pokemon. Its ability, Sands of Somnolence, prevents Pokemon that make contact with it from healing.
The artist has even shown off what the shiny versions of these designs would look like. As regional variants have become a more prominent and popular aspect of new Pokemon releases throughout the past decade or so, fans have began to create more such designs of their own. With Pokemon Legends: Z-A also set to release at an undetermined point this year, fans have extensively speculated what kinds of Pokemon might receive Kalosian regional variants in the next major release.
