Alongside the energetic Fire-type and the swift Water-type, the Grass-type is known to be much calmer. As such, they are often recommended by Pokémon Professors as starter Pokémon, as their relaxed demeanors make them easy to get along with. However, Grass-type Pokémon are not just easygoing; they are also crafty battlers that make amazing offensive allies.
Venusaur, the first known Grass-type starter, helped coin the legendary Solar Beam move that many Grass-type Pokémon since then have used. More recent starters, such as Meowscarada, have become newer fan-favorites. No matter what, every Grass-type starter is famous in their own right, though in the anime, some have had greater roles than others.
Gentle Rillaboom Always Works To Perfect Its Drumming
Rillaboom Wishes for a Peaceful Environment
The cheerful Grass-type starter Grookey is rarely seen without a stick in its hand, an item it uses to create rhythms. As it grows and evolves, the Grass-type becomes even better at drumming, even working with a true drum set after evolving into Rillaboom. Groups of Rillaboom will choose who becomes leader based on their musical skills, and the leader will thus rule with compassion. However, the Drummer Pokémon dislikes discord and will battle against wrongdoers.
Goh, a former traveling companion of Ash's, later added a Grookey to his roster. However, the fun-loving Chimp Pokémon never evolved into Thwackey or even Rillaboom. As such, the most important role Rillaboom has had was alongside Leon, the Champion of the Galar region. The Drummer Pokémon battled alongside its Trainer during the Masters Eight Tournament, most notably against Alain. During the battle, it was revealed that Rillaboom could Gigantamax, much like Leon's ace Charizard.
Chesnaught Is a Selfless Fighter
The Spiny Armor Pokémon Can Easily Tackle Tanks
Since its time as a Chespin and Quilladin, Chesnaught has always been a kindhearted Pokémon. In fact, the Spiny Armor Pokémon is rarely known to start fights. However, when necessary, it will attack foes with great strength and do what it must to defeat them. The Grass/Fighting-type is also incredibly selfless; even if it is in danger, it will use its shield to protect its loved ones.
Clemont, a friend of Ash's from the Kalos region, owns a Chespin that has yet to evolve into either Quilladin or Chesnaught. In the anime, Chesnaught only had a few minor roles, both alongside good Trainers and wicked Trainers. Such examples include either the Spiny Armor Pokémon owned by the villainous Millis Steel, or the Grass/Fighting-type owned by Alain. However, Chesnaught was the ace Pokémon of Calem in Pokémon Generations, acting as an indirect force, alongside its Trainer, that helped AZ reunite with his Floette.
Decidueye’s Accuracy Can Decide Battles in Seconds
One of Several Pokémon With a Hisuian Form
As soon as Rowlet debuted, fans were instantly intrigued by the adorable owl-like Rowlet. A Grass/Flying-type at first, Rowlet changes type as soon as it evolves into its final form of Decidueye. This Grass/Ghost-type Pokémon is famous for its amazing accuracy, which it uses to shoot arrows with perfect precision. A collected Pokémon most of the time, Decidueye, however, will go into a panic if caught off guard.
Aside from Nemona, Decidueye has also appeared alongside the anime counterpart for Hau, the main character's rival in the Generation VII games. First seen as a Dartrix, the Grass/Ghost-type has since remained a main part of Hau's team in the animated series. Like its game counterpart, Decidueye can work with normal attacks such as Leaf Blade and Spirit Shackle, as well as the signature Z-Move Sinister Arrow Raid. This Pokémon also assisted its Trainer in a great battle against Shiny Guzzlord, which threatened to destroy the Manalo Stadium.
Meganium Is Able To Revive Plants and Soothe Troubled Hearts
The Herb Pokémon Recently Received a Mega Evolution
Chikorita, the adorable Grass-type starter from the Johto region, recently became a starter for another region. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Chikorita is the Grass-type starter for the player character in the Kalos region. Upon evolving into Bayleef and then Meganium, it remains the same strong Pokémon that fans knew before the game, though with a new twist. Like Emboar and fellow Johto starter Feraligatr, Meganium can now Mega Evolve, in its case into the Grass/Fairy-type Mega Meganium.
Early in his adventures in the Johto region, Ash befriended a wild Chikorita that later evolved into a Bayleef. However, the main Meganium in the animated series belonged to Vincent and Casey. Vincent received his Meganium from Professor Elm as his starter Pokémon, training it into a great fighter in time for the Silver Conference. Meanwhile, Casey also chose Chikorita as her starter Pokémon; as a Meganium, it would never leave her side and even help Casey battle against Team Rocket.
Serperior Will Only Battle Against Powerful Foes
The Fearsome Lord of the Forest
Cool and collected, Snivy is a Pokémon with a bit of a smug streak. In fact, upon evolving into its final form of Serperior, its self-righteousness only seems to grow. The Regal Pokémon, according to the Pokédex, will only truly show its strength when facing down an opponent it deems worthy. No matter what, however, Serperior will always face its foes with a piercing gaze.
Though Snivy and Servine have been seen in the anime, especially via Ash's own Pokémon, Serperior itself is quite a rare sight. The greatest example of a powerful Serperior thus lies with Trip's ace Pokémon, who was able to defeat Ash's Pikachu in his first-ever battle. Since then, Serperior has remained a confident Pokémon, and like other members of his species, the Grass-type will only give it his all when battling tough opponents. However, he cares for Trip deeply and is shown to be a good sport even when losing battles.
Venusaur’s Flower Can Absorb Powerful Sunlight Energy
The First Known Grass-type Starter Pokémon
Bulbasaur remains a popular Pokemon for many reasons, one of which being its major role in the anime. Ash's Bulbasaur is likely the most well-known member of its species, a loyal Pokémon with a strong sense of justice. However, like its best friend Squirtle, Bulbasaur never evolved over the course of the original anime. When a Bulbasaur does fully evolve, however, it will gain a new sense of strength that it can only obtain through becoming a Venusaur. Distinctive for the large flower atop its back, this famous Grass/Poison-type Pokémon was also one of the very first Pokémon to use the now-recognizable Solar Beam attack.
Aside from her Blaziken and Wartortle, May also owns a Venusaur, originally obtained as a Bulbasaur. This sweet-natured Pokémon became friends with May after the Trainer ended up in her home in the Forbidden Forest, and later made the decision to join her team. She thus became a part of her roster for Pokémon Contests, and even went to Kanto with May, where she later met Ash's Bulbasaur and learned more about battling from the other Grass/Poison-type. Later on, she returned as a powerful Venusaur in the Sinnoh region, where the Seed Pokémon took part in the Wallace Cup.
Torterra Protects an Entire Ecosystem
A Grass/Ground-type Also Called a "Moving Forest"
As many fans of the original Pokémon anime know, Ash does not always fully evolve any starter Pokémon he meets on his journey. However, there have been a few examples of starter Pokémon he does happen to train to the fullest. One such example lies with his Torterra, a kind Grass-type who was often seen helping other Pokémon. Ash's Pokémon later evolved into Torterra while facing off against Team Rocket, using his brand-new Leaf Storm attack to immediately send them away.
Like other members of his species, Torterra has always had great Defense, especially seen during his time as a Grotle and then in his fully evolved state. He had some trouble after evolving into Grotle, as his Speed was greatly reduced, yet thankfully gained some help via Paul's Torterra, even though their Trainers were not on friendly terms. Outside of battle, Torterra is stoic yet loyal, and deeply cares for those around him. Since he was a Grotle, smaller Pokémon have been found on the ecosystem on the Continent Pokémon's back, where some even decide to make their nests.
Meowscarada Is Liko’s Partner Pokémon
An Agile and Cunning Grass/Dark-type
After the finale of the original Pokémon anime, fans bid farewell to Ash Ketchum and Pikachu. However, a new Pokémon anime series, Pokemon Horizons: The Series, showcases a new main character, Liko, alongside her partner Pokémon Sprigatito. Unlike Ash, Liko was quite nervous at the start of her journey, though she has since evolved into a much braver Trainer and adventurer. By her side nowadays is Meowscarada, the fully evolved form of her partner Pokémon.
As a Sprigatito, the Grass-type took some time to warm up to Liko. However, as a Floragato and then a Meowscarada, the Magician Pokémon is now very close with her Trainer, and is often outside of her Poké Ball. Like other members of her species, Meowscarada is swift, agile, and cunning, with a penchant for pulling pranks. Her signature move Flower Trick remains her best attack in battle, especially when Meowscarada's powers are boosted in her Terastal state.
Sceptile Watches Over Its Home With Great Dedication
Sceptile Changes Type Through Mega Evolution
Out of all the Grass-type Pokémon that Ash has trained, many fans regard Sceptile as the best of the bunch. Once a Treecko, the Forest Pokémon has always been calm and collected, a common personality among Grass-type Pokémon. It was also extremely protective of its forest home, a trait that is often seen with the entire family tree; after all, according to the Pokédex, Sceptile acts as the guardian of the woods it lives in. After leaving the forest, Sceptile has since become extremely loyal and protective over its loved ones.
As a Grovyle, the Grass-type's confidence was shaken after it tried and failed to win the heart of a Meganium, who instead wished to be with a Tropius. The newly-evolved Sceptile found that it was unable to use any attacks, though it gained its confidence back while saving its friends from Team Rocket. Since then, Sceptile has been a key member of Ash's team, even able to defeat Pokémon like Darkrai. Unlike Sawyer's Sceptile, Ash's Sceptile cannot Mega Evolve; however, the Forest Pokémon would certainly become an even greater force to be reckoned with if this power were learned.
