Summary

  • Mew from Space World 1997 has been successfully transferred to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet after nearly 27 years.
  • Before Generation 4, Mew could only be obtained through Nintendo events or trading with others who had it.
  • The complicated process involves transferring the Mew from an old Gen 1 game through various generations using a card dumper and flash card to reach the modern games.

A Pokemon player has successfully managed to transfer the rare Mew from Space World 1997 into the modern-day Pokemon Scarlet and Violet games. The Pokemon universe contains many rare and legendary creatures, and the powerful Psychic feline Mew may very well be one of the most elusive of all. Despite playing a major role in the lore of the original Pokemon Red and Blue games, Mew could not be encountered or captured in the base game without glitches or data mining. This would be the case for every mainline Pokemon game until Generation 4’s Diamond and Pearl, which allowed players to import it from the Wii My Pokemon Ranch spin-off.

Before then, the only legitimate way for Pokemon trainers to add Mew to their collections was to either obtain it from a special Nintendo event or trade for it with someone who did. The first physical event offering Mew was Space World 1997 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, on November 21–24. In addition to playable demos of the then-upcoming Pokemon Gold and Silver games, Nintendo offered 100,000 eventgoers the chance to transfer Mew to their game cartridges from a special machine.

Nearly 27 years after the Space World 1997 Mews were first handed out, a Reddit user by the handle of SwimJumpy8678 has successfully imported one into Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. They shared a YouTube video from Porygon's Pokedex explaining the process, which was once thought to be impossible until another player discovered a Pokemon Blue cartridge with the rare Mew.

To transfer the Mew from the old game to Pokemon Home, one requires a Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color link cable, a Japanese copy of Pokemon Blue, a card dumper, a Flash card, and all of the games and hardware needed to transfer from Generation 3 to Generation 7.

Transferring 1997 Mew to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is a Massive Process

Once everything is gathered, the player downloads a Pokemon Blue save file with the rare Mew stored, which was preserved online by dedicated fans. After the file is downloaded, it must be renamed and transferred into the card dumper. From there, the player uses modder Lorenzoone's Gen 3 to Gen X trading program to transfer the Mew from the old Gen 1 game to their Gen 3 cartridge. After raising the Mew’s level in-game, its trainer installs the Gen 3 to Gen X program onto their Flash card and runs it on their Game Boy Advance, which they will use to trade with the Game Boy Color.

Once the Mew is traded from Generation 3 to Generation 4, all that remains is for the player to simply trade it across various games and programs until it is in Pokemon Home, where it can be sent to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. SwimJumpy8678 was able to use this method to transfer not only the Space World 1997 Mew, but the ones offered at other old Nintendo events, ensuring that practically any version of Pokemon’s playful Psychic can be brought into the modern games.
