Summary

  • New fan art reimagines the Gen 3 starter Pokemon with different types, like Grass-type Torchic.
  • The Hoenn starter trio is popular for their designs and stats, and for being some of the only starters with Mega Evolutions.

The adorable starter trio from the Gen 3 Pokemon games has always been some of the most widely-beloved of all, and some popular online fan art has re-imagined these classic designs to fit different types, including a cute Grass-type Torchic. The vast roster of starter Pokemon from throughout the Pokemon franchise has been some of the most popular subjects of fan artwork for decades now, and that doesn't look to be changing any time soon.

The Grass-type Treecko, the Fire-type Torchic, and the Water-type Mudkip are the three starter Pokemon that players visiting the Gen 3 games' Hoenn region will meet, though these iconic starters can, of course, be acquired naturally in other core-series titles. Their popularity among fans is largely owed not only to their fantastic designs, but also the formidable stats and typings offered by their evolved forms, which make them some of the most battle-capable starters out of the whole bunch. Aside from the Gen 1 starters, these three are some of the only starter Pokemon that have been lucky enough to receive their own Mega Evolutions.

While certain Mega Evolutions are known to alter a Pokemon's type, a batch of popular custom designs recently shared by the artist known as kaltzer totally reimagines what the Hoenn starter Pokemon look like. These designs recreate the three starter Pokemon as different types, featuring a Grass-type Torchic line, a Water-type Treecko line, and a Fire-type Mudkip line. The designs themselves are more akin to regional variants than anything else, a subvariety of Pokemon which, while of the same species as a certain Pokemon, feature notably different appearances, types, behaviors, and more.

These Fanmade Pokemon Designs Would Make Awesome Regional Variants

Regional variants were originally introduced in the Gen 7 Pokemon titles, but have become increasingly popular, both among fans as well as in the games, ever since. With regional variants playing a pretty big role in Pokemon Legends: Arceus and helping to spruce up a region that players have already seen before, many fans are hopeful that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will bring in a variety of new Kalos-based regional variants.

With Pokemon Legends: Z-A confirmed to feature Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig as its starter trio, some fans are curious to learn whether the game will introduce regional variants of their evolved forms, just as Legends: Arceus did for its own starters. With Legends: Z-A also set to bring Mega Pokemon back when it launches later this year, though, it's also very likely that the game's starters could instead get the Mega Evolution treatment, just as the Gen 3 starters did with Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
