One Pokemon fan has managed to create an impressive collection of artwork, giving a wide variety of the fantastical creatures a makeover inspired by The Lord of the Rings. Pokemon is one of the most popular franchises in the world, as it has generated movies, television shows, games, trading cards, and more based on the ever-growing IP.
Pokemon first made its debut in Japan in 1996, where it introduced players to 151 of the creatures that would soon skyrocket in popularity. The franchise quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, with people around the globe collecting as many of the monsters as they could through both the video games and trading cards. Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings was written by J.R.R. Tolkien and first made its debut with the novel The Fellowship of the Ring in 1954. In 2001, director Peter Jackson brought the novels to life by releasing his film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, which proved to be popular with critics and fans alike. While the franchises have never officially crossed over with one another, one fan dared to imagine what such a collaboration would look like.
One Fan Blends Lord of the Rings With Pokemon
In two recent posts on Reddit, Lyndorr shared their very own Pokemon fan art, which imagines what some of the creatures would look like if they came from The Lord of the Rings' Middle-earth. Several people in the comments were quick to show their love of Lyndorr's version of Marill, which features a new evolution called Silmarill. One person called Lyndor a genius, while others stated that the design was "absolutely perfect." The name of the Pokemon is a play on words, referencing the novel The Silmarillion, another one of J.R.R. Tolkien's works that expanded upon the lore of Middle-earth.
There are plenty of other creatures featured in Lyndorr's collection of artwork as well, like a redesign of Pokemon's Torterra that looks like it would be right at home in the Shire. In addition to having a tree on its back, Torterra's shell looks more like a home, with a round door on the side and a chimney near its head. It wouldn't look out of place to see a Hobbit sitting on top of the Pokemon with their back against its large tree.
This isn't the first time Lyndorr has shown off their appreciation of the franchise, as they also recently created artwork that gave Pokemon a Norse mythology twist. Their Norse designs were also a big hit with fellow fans who were quick to praise the artist for their work. Given the worldwide popularity of the franchise, it seems as if fans everywhere will continue to use their imagination to find unique ways to show off their love of Pokemon.
