Many artists from the Pokemon community have been working on their own Mega Evolution designs in anticipation of Pokemon Legends: Z-A's launch later this year, with one particularly popular piece of artwork imagining what a Mega Excadrill could look like. The return of Mega Evolution is something that fans of the Pokemon series have been desperately hoping to see for many years, and so it's no surprise that the franchise's eager community has seen a flood of custom designs centered around Mega Pokemon since the reveal of Legends: Z-A during Pokemon Day last year.
Such fanart just kept coming throughout the year since Legends: Z-A's big reveal, despite not a drop of new information about the game officially being shared until recently. This year's Pokemon Presents event finally gave fans their first look at some gameplay footage of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which will be featuring Mega Evolution for the first time since the Gen 7 titles. Though many parts of the pre-release footage have been met with mixed reception, the wealth of new information and ensuing discussion effortlessly rekindled many artists' inspiration when it came to designing Mega Pokemon of their own.

Community interest has more recently been piqued yet again after several details regarding new Mega Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A leaked online. Though fans will have to wait for further official information to know for sure what new Mega Pokemon may await in the next major release, one talented artist from the Pokemon community has imagined what a Mega Excadrill might look like through a design of their own. This isn't the first custom Mega design shared by HertzBurst, the fan behind the concept, either. Their Mega Excadrill design takes inspiration from the colors used in Excadrill's beta sprite, and even comes with a fanmade Pokedex entry which claims that Mega Evolution causes the Pokemon's fingers to fuse together, making them more accurately resemble drill bits.
Mega Excadrill Would Be a Great Addition for Future Pokemon Games
Although this year's Pokemon Presents event didn't reveal any new Pokemon or Megas for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it did give fans a bit of insight into how the mechanic will work in the game. Unlike every previous core-series Pokemon title, Legends: Z-A will be featuring real-time battles, and it appears that Pokemon will only be able to remain Mega Evolved for a limited time during each battle.
This wasn't the case for Mega Pokemon in previous games, as even in a turn-based format, Pokemon that had been Mega Evolved would remain in that state until the end of the battle. Pokemon Legends: Z-A's adjustments to this feature may present an effort to reel in the capabilities of Mega Evolution somewhat, perhaps pointing towards a focus on making typical gameplay more challenging.
