Pokemon Red and Blue were released in 1998, and since then, the series has seen major success. Beyond having a long line of popular games, there have also been many seasons of the anime, multiple feature-length films, and a successful trading card game. Some basic elements that have been part of the games from the beginning are catching and releasing Pokemon, TMs and HMs, elemental typing, and more. With many Pokemon fans playing the games competitively, there's always been a push to discover the most optimal Pokemon team, the best attacks, and more. One gamer has discovered the STAB feature after 18 years of playing Pokemon games which may change the way they battle trainers and players alike.
Pokemon GO Players Aren't Happy About Mega Rayquaza Change
Despite the hype around the recent event, Pokemon GO fans express their disappointment over one major Mega Rayquaza change that Niantic introduced.
Reddit user Froggiegorl recently shared their story about learning the STAB Pokemon feature from their cousin. According to the Reddit user, they were showing off their team that revolves around Cinccino in Pokemon White 2. Their Normal-type Pokemon Cinccino was being used as a Grass-type so it could use Bullet Seed combined with Skill Link. After seeing this workaround, the gamer's cousin explained the STAB system and how they may be better off using a Grass-type Pokemon with moves that match their typing to maximize the damage output. STAB stands for "same type attack bonus," which means that a Pokemon using a move that matches their type will have increased damage. This will amplify the damage of a Charmander using a Fire-type move, Mewtwo using a Psychic-type move, and more.
This Pokemon Fan Discovered STAB After 18 Years
Froggiegorl expressed that they were so surprised that STAB had gone unnoticed by them for 18 years. This gamer may have been able to finish multiple Pokemon games without knowing STAB, but the conversation with their cousin may help them win future battles. Although this gamer discovered the STAB feature in Gen 5's Pokemon White 2, it has been a hidden stat since Pokemon Red and Blue were released. While some players may not know about STAB by name, many Pokemon fans have noticed increased attack damage when using certain move types. There's also a Special Attack stat that can be improved upon to increase the damage output even more. Players can contrastly increase a Pokemon's Special Defense which will help against players that have optimized their STAB damage.
Though knowing STAB may be key for players to win some Pokemon battles, it's likely that other players have beaten the Elite Four without knowing it. As Game Freak continues to release Pokemon games, future games will almost certainly retain the mechanic.
