Images, screenshots, documents, and all sorts of information surfaced online regarding the tenth generation of Pokemon games. The sheer size and relevance of the new Pokemon Gen 10 leaks, including a plethora of details about confirmed or possible projects for the future, as well as the release date of these games up to Gen 11, gained the nickname of "Teraleak 2.0." The first so-called Teraleak happened months ago, and multiple confidential documents and information surrounding Pokemon Legends: Z-A and the franchise in general were leaked online due to a breach in Game Freak's systems. Now, the leaks have also been corroborated by a known insider, confirming the validity of all Pokemon Gen 10 leaks so far.

Pokemon games have a long history with leaks, from printed outlets like CoroCoro to riddles on social media. So far, a lot of relevant details regarding the development and features of Pokemon Gen 10 games, including their names, have been leaked. The list is as follows:

Pokemon Gen 10 Name and Setting Leaks Explained

Ever since Pokemon Gen 10 leaks started circulating with the Teraleak, it was clear that the games would have an island setting. Originally, it was believed that Gen 10 would take place in Greece, and the recent leaks reveal that The Pokemon Company was indeed considering Greece alongside Canada, Scandinavia, and the US's West Coast as possible inspirations, but eventually settled on Southeast Asia.

Pokemon games have never been to Asia outside of Japan-inspired settings so far. The locations for each game were:

  • Gen 1-4: Japan (Kanto, Kansai, Kyushu, and Hokkaido)
  • Gen 5: The United States (New York)
  • Gen 6: Europe (France)
  • Gen 7: The United States (Hawaii)
  • Gen 8: Europe (United Kingdom)
  • Gen 9: Europe (Spain and Portugal)

Even the original Gen 10 leaks pointed to game names similar to Pokemon Wind and Wave, so this detail is most likely accurate.

What to Expect From Pokemon Gen 10 Legendaries

Considering that two separate sources mention "wind grandpa and wave grandma" for the Legendary Gen 10 Pokemon, this detail seems very accurate, especially thanks to Riddler Khu's confirmation. These will most likely be Pokemon that express wisdom with their design, possibly alongside strength for the Wind Legendary and calm for the Wave Legendary, based on the respective real-life inspirations.

Pokemon Gen 10's Procedurally Generated Pokemon is Already Clear

Procedural generation is something that makes sense for Pokemon games after the criticism towards Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's empty world. Having procedurally generated islands makes sense, especially with the game focusing on the jungle biome and diving underwater for exploration, making the title never run out of content and always be fresh.

However, it's interesting that the alleged Seed Pokemon will be procedurally generated, meaning that its base form will be shared by all players, whereas the evolution may theoretically be different for every single existing player, depending on how many details can vary. Since this is called "Seed Pokemon," it's likely that it will need both wind and water to evolve, taking the inspiration full circle. It's also defined as a flower-like Pokemon in the leaks, which makes sense, and the pattern is supposedly changing in terms of flowers and geometric figures or mandalas.

This concept is not new, with Pokemon's Spinda and Vivillon using a similar logic. These critters don't have infinite variations, but they may be the predecessors of Gen 10's Seed Pokemon and what inspired its gimmick.

Pokemon Gen 10's Starters Are Officially One of a Kind

Based on the leaks, Gen 10's starter Pokemon seem to be catchable by players at the start of the game, instead of being given to them by a Pokemon Professor. According to the leaked documents, the starters will be in the middle of a traffic jam, and someone will ask the protagonist to catch these Pokemon to return things to normal.

This is a unique approach to starters, and the closest thing to it is Pokemon Legends: Arceus' starters, which escape and force the protagonist to catch them, but the Professor is still the one who gives them out in the end.

Pokemon Wind and Wave May Be Checking a Big Item Off Players' Wish Lists

One of the most requested features in Pokemon games over the years has been the ability to pet all the critters and freely choose which Pokemon can be ridden across the world. These are both realities, based on the leaked Pokemon Gen 10 images and videos that show characters petting critters differently based on their size, and also adjusting their riding position based on the size of the chosen Pokemon.

Pokemon's ride feature was first added in Gen 5 and has come a long way since then, with Gen 9 having either Koraidon or Miraidon as rideable Pokemon throughout Paldea, unlocking new traversal abilities while progressing through the game. Based on the leaks, this is not the case for Gen 10, with players instead being able to ride any large Pokemon as they please, possibly also determining their traversal abilities with this choice.

Why You Shouldn't Jump to Conclusions About Pokemon Gen 10's Battle Gimmick

Another big part of Pokemon Gen 10 is going to be its battle gimmick. While Pokemon Legends: Z-A has real-time battles, it's unclear at this stage whether the next generation of games will return to the classic turn-based combat or keep honing the new formula.

Weather moves in Pokemon already exist, with the biggest example being Weather Ball, which deals damage based on the current weather type, if applicable. As such, having weather moves as the main battle gimmick in Gen 10 may backfire unless these are very fleshed out and unique. With procedural generation and a focus on wind and water, it doesn't seem unlikely for Gen 10 games to have an entirely new take on weather and associated moves. For example, the weather may change randomly, allowing players to experiment with new moves.

This doesn't even sound far-fetched when comparing it to past battle gimmicks in Pokemon games. These are:

  • Mega Evolutions in Gen 6
  • Z-Moves in Gen 7
  • Dynamax and Gigantamax in Gen 8
  • Terastallization in Gen 9
  • Weather moves in Gen 10 (to be confirmed)

One could argue that Pokemon double battles in Gen 3 or triple battles in Gen 5 make for their own gimmicks, but the concept of a full-blown battle mechanic is tied to Mega Evolutions first.
