Summary

  • The first day of Pokemon GO Fest 2024: Global experienced a technical issue that prevented players using Remote Raid Passes from obtaining mons with special backgrounds.
  • Niantic has now announced it will be issuing compensation to those players in the form of Timed Research awarding the Pokemon with special backgrounds they missed out on.
  • The amount of Timed Research any given player receives will depend on how many raids they completed during the first day of GO Fest 2024: Global.

Niantic has detailed its Pokemon GO compensation plans for GO Fest 2024. The developer will attempt to make good on the event's technical issues by offering Pokemon GO players extra Timed Research, whose amount will be personalized and thus vary on a case-by-case basis.

Pokemon GO Fest 2024 took place between late May and early July across three cities. Its trio of location-specific festivities was followed by a global event held on the 13th and 14th of July. All four events offered chances to catch some mons with special backgrounds that add to their uniqueness. In practice, however, GO Fest 2024: Global experienced issues that prevented some players from obtaining these special Pokemon.

With the 2024 Pokemon World Championships on the horizon, Niantic announces a Pokemon GO tie-in event for all players of the popular mobile title.

Mons With Special Backgrounds Returning to Pokemon GO as Compensation

Following fan complaints, Niantic started investigating the Pokemon GO Fest 2024 issues in late July. The company concluded that probe a week later, having taken to social media on August 2 to announce it will be issuing compensation in the form of Timed Research that awards the same mons with guaranteed special backgrounds that the players missed out on back in July. The rewards for these bonus sets of tasks will hence include Necrozma and Ultra Beasts.

Pokemon GO Fest 2024 Compensation Will Vary By Player

Niantic's investigation confirmed early player reports that suggested special-background mons were unobtainable when using Pokemon GO Remote Raid Passes. And while the developer did not elaborate on the root cause of the issue, it found that the problem was only present during the first day of GO Fest 2024: Global. The company hence plans to personalize its compensation packages, whose exact number of Timed Research will depend on how many remote raids the receiving player completed on July 13.

The Pokemon GO developer has yet to commit to a concrete time frame for when it plans to issue this compensation. Its track record indicates that the recompense will be rolled out in stages rather than reaching all affected players at once. In any case, Niantic said that the bonus Timed Research will expire on December 31, 2025, giving fans plenty of time to complete it.

Social media reactions to this plan appear to skew positive. Although some players said they would prefer Niantic to fix their existing Ultra Beasts and Necrozma by updating them with special backgrounds rather than force them to catch new ones, others welcomed the opportunity to double their GO Fest 2024 haul of elusive mons. At the same time, some vocal fans aren't pleased that Niantic won't be doing anything for players who consciously avoided remote raids on the event's first day due to being aware of the issue with special-background Pokemon.
