- The missing chef jacket on the Gengar costume, which is based on a plush, could be adjusted in the future as players find it confusing and less seasonal than earlier costumes.
With Pokemon GO in the middle of its Halloween event, many players are unhappy about Gengar's sushi chef costume. Pokemon GO has celebrated Halloween since its early years, but the latest event has upset fans in a few ways.
Since Niantic released Pokemon GO, the mobile game has celebrated seven Halloweens. Past Pokemon GO Halloween events included increased spawn rates for Ghost and Dark-type Pokemon, and that's no different this year. Previous Pokemon GO Halloween events featured seasonal variants for starter Pokemon, Pichu, Pikachu, Vulpix, and more, Mega Bannette, and unique player outfit options. Among the Ghost-type Pokemon spawning in Pokemon GO this year is a Gengar in a special costume. With some differences from past Pokemon GO seasonal events, this Gengar has the community divided.
Reddit user CuboneClique recently shared a screenshot of a Tricks and Treats Gengar with a moderate CP level. This Gengar costume is exclusive to Pokemon GO's Halloween 2023 event, and it features the Ghost-type Pokemon in a sushi chef outfit. The Gengar costume seems loosely based on a plush being sold at Pokemon Centers, but it has a strange alteration. Unlike the Gengar plush, the Pokemon GO costume is missing the chef jacket. Without the iconic jacket, many Pokemon GO players are confused by its appearance. Though the seasonal Pokemon GO costume includes the chef hat and sushi decorations adorning Gengar's head, some are suggesting that it looks like it's wearing garbage.
The Gengar sushi chef is meant to be wearing a white and yellow coat that covers most of the Pokemon. Pokemon GO's 2023 Halloween event isn't the first time that Gengar has received a costume for the holiday. In 2020, Pokemon GO players could catch a Gengar in a Banette costume, while the Spooky Festival of 2022 centered on the Ghost-type Pokemon with a witch hat on. With Pokemon GO players comparing this year's Gengar costume to earlier years, 2023 seems to be the most underwhelming for Gengar fans. As Pokemon GO players are unable to catch Gengar in costumes from previous years, the sushi chef iteration is the only one currently available.
Because the Pokemon GO Gengar costume appears to be missing the jacket featured on the Pokemon plush it's based on, it may be adjusted in the future. With earlier Pokemon GO Gengar costumes being celebrated more than the current one, this Halloween may draw fewer players than in previous years. Niantic rarely updates Pokemon GO to alter the appearance of Pokemon, but it may make an exception for this year's costume which seems less seasonal than earlier ones.
