A lucky Pokemon GO player was invited to a special Gigantamax raid in Antarctica, sharing the story and highlighting the Grimmsnarl they were able to capture as a result. The dual Dark/Fairy type has been a recent addition to the popular mobile game Pokemon GO, also being seen in Gigantamax Raids during the Wild Area 2025 event.
It's been a busy few weeks for Niantic as its popular mobile title has seen a variety of limited-time events. In keeping with its annual tradition, Pokemon GO kicked off its two-part Halloween event on October 21, then giving way to the Enchanted Hollow, followed by the Wild Area 2025. While the weekend event has just wrapped up, it gave Pokemon GO players their first chance to capture GMax Grimmsnarl, a Galar-based Pokemon that has finally made its debut in the mobile spinoff. For one player in particular, they were able to capture a very special version of the Dark Fairy.

Pokemon GO Player Invited to a GMax Raid in Antarctica
Over on the Pokemon GO subReddit, a user named boyo1999 posted their experience taking part in the Wild Area 2025 event over the weekend of November 15 and 16. A friend of theirs invited them to a Gigantamax Raid for Grimmsnarl, but what boyo1999 didn't expect was that the raid itself was taking place from the Mawson post office in Antarctica. The location, according to Pokemon GO, was over 16,000km away and thankfully, the 40+ people involved were able to take down the 6-star difficulty raid and gave boyo1999 the bragging rights to say they've caught a Pokemon on every continent.
Unfortunately, the caught GMax Grimmsnarl wasn't perfect even at a 3 star, with its defense and health barely crossing over into the third section. Regardless, comments under the post were all very congratulatory, with players also posting their own stories, while others were hoping to get a Friend ID for the person to potentially join in on the next Antarctican Grimmsnarl raid.
PokeStop locations in Antarctica have continued to gain traction as of late. While the continent may be largely devoid of human life, there are specific locations, including research statons where the people occupy. To help pass the time, some of the inhabitants play Pokemon GO and to serve those people, Niantic has added PokeStops and Gyms there. In fact, back in 2024, Niantic added new PokeStops to Davis Research Station at the request of scientists stationed there.
While a good majority of players will likely never get to spin those PokeStops in Antarctica, it probably isn't one of the most rare locations. Back in 2023, one player reported that they received a gift in Pokemon GO from a player in North Korea. The attached postcard said "Buddha in Northkorea" based in the city of Jonchon, followed by a second gift from a PokeStop in Hamhung. While certainly a unique location, the user wasn't entirely sure if they were legit or the result of someone using some sort of spoofing software.
