Summary

  • Pokemon GO leaks hint at a remote trading feature.
  • It's unclear exactly how remote trading would work in the game.
  • Currently, the only official way to trade Pokemon in Pokemon GO is to be in close proximity to the person you are trading with.

According to the latest Pokemon GO datamining efforts, it appears as though the popular augmented reality mobile game will be adding remote trading. When Pokemon GO first launched in 2016, it was missing many of the popular features that are readily available in the game today. One such feature was trading, which allows Pokemon GO players to swap Pokemon with each other.

Pokemon GO trading was added back in June 2018. At the time, many fans of the game expressed disappointment that there were no remote trading features. To this day, the only official way to trade Pokemon in Pokemon GO is to be in close proximity to the person that you're trading with, but there is evidence to suggest that will be changing soon.

Pokemon GO Fest 2025: Paris announces the return of a popular event from 2024 that players in romantic relationships may want to know about.

As posted on TheSilphRoad, new lines found Pokemon GO's settings point to a remote trade feature being added to the game. Presumably, Pokemon GO remote trades will let players swap Pokemon with anyone on their friends list, similarly to how players can invite their friends to raids. While unconfirmed, it wouldn't be surprising if Pokemon GO remote trades required players to use some kind of item. This would be similar to how remote raids require Remote Raid Passes, but since items are not currently required for regular trades, that remains to be seen.

Pokemon GO Leaks Points to Remote Trades

Pokemon GO fans seem happy about the possibility of remote trades being added to the game, with many praising it as another smart quality-of-life feature. Recently, it was confirmed that Pokemon GO will be increasing remote raid limits - another move that has earned praise from the game's community. These developments have reassured fans that Pokemon GO will be just fine even in the wake of its purchase by Scopely.

After Scopely acquired Pokemon GO, there was some concern that unpopular changes would be made to the game to ramp up its monetization. Instead, multiple fan-favorite changes have been announced or leaked. Now, it's unclear how much Scopely's acquisition has to do with these Pokemon GO changes. It's entirely possible all of this was planned before the Scopely buy-out, and so Pokemon GO fans should keep that in mind.

Regardless, there will be plenty of exciting new updates to look forward to in Pokemon GO in the months ahead. Pokemon GO just revealed its Summer 2025 schedule for Community Days and other events, so fans of the game should be kept plenty busy while they await official confirmation on the leaked remote trade feature.
