Pokemon GO's latest update has arrived, finally increasing the player level cap to 80, but it's coming with some unintended consequences that are causing item bags to overflow. Players running out of storage space for items and Pokemon in Pokemon GO has been a reliable money-maker for original developer Niantic and current owner Scopely, but many players were unprepared to be hit by this latest tidal wave of free items.

Pokemon GO Tour 2026 Cities and Dates Revealed

Scopely announced a few days ago that the level cap in Pokemon GO would be increased from 50 to 80 in the newest update. This news was generally celebrated by fans as a nice change of pace, since the previous level cap increase, from 40 to 50, happened back in 2020, giving its most dedicated players an ample amount of time to reach the summit. Along with adjusting how the game handles player levels, anyone currently above level 25 was told they would gain at least one more level immediately after the update's release, and plenty of free cosmetic items would become available to players who had surpassed certain leveling milestones.

To commemorate the launch of Pokemon Legends Z-A, Pokemon GO is hosting a special event featuring the three starters, Tepig, Totodile, and Chikorita.

Pokemon GO Just Flooded Players With Too Many Items

But with the release of the level cap adjustment update, players opening the game on their phones were met with a virtual avalanche of unexpected consumable reward items that filled their bags beyond capacity. Social media platforms like Reddit and Twitter have been abuzz since the update launched, with many players complaining that they automatically leveled up much higher than they had anticipated and were inundated with far more items than their current storage capacity could accommodate, causing problems like not allowing them to spin PokeStops. While Pokemon GO greatly increased players' maximum storage limits in June, that storage space isn't free and still needs to be bought piecemeal from the in-game shop.

While the sudden influx of level-up rewards is causing problems for some players, others are finding humor in the situation. A trending "You get a berry!" Meme seems to be emerging as players unload their newfound supply of Pokemon GO berries on Pokemon, mirroring the 2004 incident in which Oprah Winfrey handed out close to 300 Pontiac G6 automobiles to her studio audience.

The free item overload isn't the only complaint that players have had regarding the new update. Prior to the cap increase, players reaching level 40 were required to perform Level-Up research tasks to advance further in level, as simply accruing XP would no longer guarantee an automatic level-up. Those level-up requirements in Pokemon GO have been removed from levels 40-49, but instead reinstated once players try to hit level 71, and some who had previously completed the more difficult challenges say they have no intention of doing them over again to hit the new level cap.
