Ever since Pokemon X and Y introduced Mega Evolution in 2013, the Pokemon franchise has routinely debuted new, temporary transformations and abilities in each succeeding Pokemon generation. Pokemon Sun and Moon introduced Z-Moves, Pokemon Sword and Shield introduced Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced Terastallization. While most of these transformative mechanics remain stuck in their debut titles, Mega Evolution, Dynamaxing, and Gigantamaxing have slowly been added to Pokemon GO. However, not every Gigantamax form has been ported over to Pokemon GO yet despite Pokemon Sword and Shield nearing its sixth anniversary.

Pokemon’s Gigantamax Transformations Explained
In Pokemon Sword and Shield, trainers were able to allow their Pokemon to temporarily grow to titanic sizes with the use of a Dynamax Band in a phenomenon known as Dynamaxing. However, Dynamaxing couldn’t be done anywhere, like Mega Evolution and Z-Moves. Instead, players could only Dynamax their Pokemon in areas with Power Spots such as Pokemon Gym Stadiums, Battle Towers, and Pokemon Dens.
When typically Dynamaxed, most Pokemon will simply grow to massive sizes without changing their outward appearance but would gain the ability to briefly use powerful Max Moves. Wild Dynamax Pokemon can also be encountered and fought in Pokemon Den Max Raid Battles, requiring four trainers to help take the massive Pokemon down. Wild Dynamax Pokemon can additionally be caught once defeated.
On top of traditional Dynamax transformations, a select few Pokemon can transform into a variant of Dynamax known as Gigantamaxing. Instead of simply growing to titanic sizes, Gigantamax-capable Pokemon will change their appearance and gain access to powerful G-Max Moves. For example, the Fairy-type Cream Pokemon Alcremie will turn into a towering cake when Gigantamaxed and gain access to the G-Max Move G-Max Finale. Besides Gigantamax Alcremie, only 31 other Pokemon can Gigantamax, including:
- Gigantamax Charizard

Pokemon GO’s Roster of Gigantamax Pokemon
Dynamaxing was first introduced to Pokemon GO in September 2024 with Gigantamaxing making its debut in the mobile title about a month later in October 2024. In Pokemon GO, Pokemon that have the ability to Dynamax or Gigantamax can only be encountered during Max Battles in Power Spots that appear randomly around the world, but each Power Spot can only be interacted with once per day. So far, only 67 Pokemon can Dynamax while only 12 Gigantamax forms are featured in Pokemon GO, leaving 20 Gigantamax forms currently unavailable.

With the Pokemon franchise currently shifting its focus back to Mega Evolution amid the return of the mechanic in the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it might be awhile until all the Dynamax and Gigantamax forms are added to Pokemon GO. Despite Mega Evolution debuting in Pokemon GO in 2020, Niantic still hasn't implemented every Mega Evolution form into Pokemon GO, with Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Sharpedo, Mega Camerupt, and Mega Metagross still being unavailable. It may be more likely for developers to prioritize adding the rest of the Mega Evolutions and new ones debuting in Z-A such as Mega Dragonite than the other Gigantamax forms for the time being, with Mega Evolution taking the spotlight once more.
