One of these players is Reddit user leroyyrogers, who picked the Emolga path thinking only of getting the Pokemon as a reward. But they were surprised to discover that, to complete the Special Research, catching Emolga was one of the tasks. Pokemon GO added Emolga in 2020 in the Unova Week event, but the Flying/Electric-type has become a relatively rare spawn, so finding it is rather tricky.
Pokemon GO Special Research Confuses Some Players
The OP's account is not an isolated case, as other comments on their post have reported similar situations. One Pokemon GO player said that Crabrawler “were everywhere,” but once they selected the Pokemon's path, “suddenly there were only Emolgas around.” In a second comment, a trainer said that after choosing Ducklett's path, they no longer saw the Water/Flying-type Pokemon. Other Pokemon GO players used Incense and needed hours to progress in the task during GO Fest, while some luckier ones said they didn't have so much trouble.
As with other research, Pokemon GO players who have unlocked The Dawn of a New Discovery survey can complete it in their own time, as it has no end date. As well as having encounters with Emolga, Ducklett, and Crabrawler as a reward, Pokemon GO players who progress to the second part of the research will have the chance to obtain Cosmog. That is a golden opportunity, as Cosmog evolves into Lunala or Solgaleo, making players closer to getting Necrozma's fusions in Pokemon GO.
