The Pokedex for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is as important to its gameplay as any other mechanic, and it had a high expectation to live up to after the previous Kalos games boasted a massive 457 Pokemon for players to catch. While Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Pokedex is no slouch at 234 obtainable mons, it doesn't come close to competing with the Pokedex from X and Y. There have been some notable cuts between the Gen 6 games and Legends: Z-A, but a few new additions have helped fill in some of the gaps.

It's clear the focus of this Pokedex is on Mega Evolution, with almost every Mega-capable mon included except for the Hoenn starters, Latios and Latias, and Rayquaza. Thankfully, Pokemon Legends: Z-A also brings back Furfrou and the elemental monkeys so that they are finally accessible on the Switch after being trapped on the 3DS for so long. Interesting to note that there are three sets of starters: the Legends: Z-A starters, the original Kalos starters, as well as the Kanto starters.

Froslass after evolving in Montenevera

Like the returning mons from X and Y, the new additions to Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Pokedex are primarily those with new Mega Evolutions, like Eelektross, Excadrill, and Froslass. Additionally, some mons like Falinks and Drampa are not only recipients of new Megas, but were also unavailable in the original Kalos Pokedex due to being introduced in later generations. Other Mega Evolutions like Camerupt and Lopunny were missing in the original Kalos dex, but were available in Gen 6 via Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Some of the Pokemon missing are set to return in the Mega Dimension DLC, including the Jigglypuff line, Zubat line, and Golurk line.

The player's character sets foot in Lumiose City - Pokemon Legends Z-A

Given that Pokemon Legends: Z-A takes place entirely within Lumiose City, it's understandable that not every critter in the Kalos Region is obtainable. However, there are some very odd omissions from the original Kalos dex, such as Rhyhorn, which plays an important role in Pokemon X and Y as a rideable mon. Some staple critters that have been present in nearly every Pokemon game are also missing, like Geodude and Zubat, and a large portion of the Kalos dex's Water-type Pokemon have been cut, likely due to there being fewer bodies of water within Lumiose City.

pokemon legends z-a raichu mega evolutions

Other mons like the Legendary Birds, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, seem like prime candidates to return in the Mega Dimension DLC for Legends: Z-A. However, it's unlikely that this DLC would add nearly double the number of Pokemon in the base game Pokedex to complete the original Kalos Pokedex, so there will likely be some players disappointed by the final dex size.
