Of course, we are talking about Poke Balls, which come in a wide variety, and each of them has a particular effect that helps trainers catch the most elusive species that have made their homes in Lumiose City.

Updated December 17, 2025: We've updated this guide with all the new types of Poke Balls introduced in the Mega Dimension DLC, which can only be obtained by participating in the Hyperspace Lumiose activities exclusive to the DLC. Some of the most notorious additions are the Moon Ball and Safari Ball, which have the coolest designs of all Poke Balls, and the new methods to get more of these rare catching devices, including the elusive Beast Ball that can now be farmed with the new method.

All Poke Ball Types & Where to Find Them in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Poke Balls are the essential tool every trainer should carry to make the most out of their journey through Lumiose City. Poke Balls can be purchased in every Pokemon Center in Lumiose, from Nurse Joy, though if players want more specialized tools to catch Pokemon, they should visit the Poke Ball Boutique. The location of this store is detailed on the map above.

However, there are special Poke Balls that can only be obtained following certain requisites. Here's every Poke Ball-type in the game, and where to find them:

Keep in mind that Love, Moon, and Safari Balls are exclusively obtained by defeating Hyperspace Trainers in the Pokemon Legends Z-A Mega Dimension DLC.

It is also possible to get even more Rare Poke Balls by consuming an Item Power Donut (Sour Flavor Score 100+), and breaking Floating Poke Balls in Hyperspace Distortions.

How to Use Poke Balls in Pokemon Legends Z-A

To use Poke Balls in Pokemon Legends Z-A, trainers need to have at least one of the mentioned items in their inventory, and then approach a Pokemon. Using ZL players will aim, then hitting ZR will release the ball and hit the Pokemon.

Trainers will have higher chances of capturing Pokemon if they weaken them first, which will leave a certain window of opportunity (3.5 seconds approx) to catch them. This window of opportunity is represented by the swirling stars effect (similar to confusion), and after only one try, the Pokemon weakened in this way will flee.

Players can also sneak on Pokemon to catch them by surprise, by launching a Ball before they can engage in combat or flee. Some Pokemon like Abra (which uses Teleport to flee) can only be caught by surprise. The Quick Ball is the best ball for this method, as it has the highest chances of success while catching Pokemon in the first turn, and sneak throws are considered to be turn 0.
