Pokemon Legends: Z-A has a ton of Pokemon that Trainers can pick up early and train to their heart's content; however, among them, there are a few rockstars that will carry players from Rank Z to A in the blink of an eye. If players want to smash through those A-Z Royale Battles like a force of nature, they'd better pick the better partners to create an optimized team composition ASAP.
This guide contains all the information about some of the best Pokemon players need to catch early and train to become powerful combatants in Lumiose City. From one of the most underestimated Electric-types that has made a surprising comeback thanks to its Mega Evolution, to an elusive trio of monkeys that will grant players considerable advantage in early game battles.
Mareep
Mareep can be found relatively easily in the first Wild Area players visit while completing the introductory quest. Some players might be already underestimating this Gen 2 Electric-type, but think twice, since Mareep's evolution line ends in one of the strongest Electric Pokemon in Legends Z-A: Ampharos. With the ability to use a wide assortment of SpA builds, Ampharos becomes a true menace starting at Level 30 (which is basically the level where Flaffy evolves). Mareep is a decent complement for any starter players decide to choose.

In the late game, Ampharos can Mega Evolve into Mega Ampharos, turning into an Electric/Dragon Pokemon, with a Base Stat Total of 610 Distributed as: 90 HP, 95 Atk, 105 Def, 165 SpA, 105 SpD, and 45 Spe. It is not the fastest nor the strongest Mega, but among the Electric-types, it has a considerable advantage thanks to its Dragon sub-typing. But here's where it gets even better: Ampharos learns Cotton Guard, which is a decent counter for melee spamming Pokemon, and can learn Hidden Power, a move that will attack with the Water-type when Ampharos is not Mega Evolved, or with the Grass-type, as Mega Ampharos. So: Lots of coverage, lots of hurt, and tons of damage with the appropriate EVs.
Eevee
Eevee is one of the Pokemon with the highest versatility in Pokemon Legends Z-A, and despite not having a new Eeveelution, it remains one of the best Pokemon to train early on. But the problem is: Where to find it? Turns out, it might be closer than what players think.

Players need to travel to the Vernal Pokemon Center, which is close to the Wild Area 1, and walk down the alley to the right from the Spawn Zone (if players fast travel). From there, follow the Pokemon Battle Cage's fence, and to the right, there will be a few Stones that players can break using Rock Smash. This will lead to a small park with a canal right in the middle. If players pay attention to the patch of green in front of them, there will be an Eevee roaming around (Lvl. 14). Enter in Stealth Mode, and throw a Quick Ball at it before it vanishes.
Dratini
Dratini is a Pokemon that requires no introduction, as many players know that it evolves into the powerful Dragonite, which has now become top of the meta thanks to its Mega Evolution being unlocked (after years of waiting). There's a way to catch Dratini early on, and it requires players to travel to Restaurant Le Nah, located in the southeastern side of Lumiose, near Vert Sector 6.
Once there, players should stand at the door and look to the building on the left. There's a ladder leading to a rooftop, and if players zoom to the opposite building (which is actually the Restaurant's rooftop), they'll be able to spot their prey. To reach that rooftop, sprint using B then Roll with Y when reaching the border.
Dratini can spawn here as an Alpha, which can be quite cool to have since it has access to special moves and better stats than a regular Pokemon (plus, the maxed Size). Catching regular Dratini requires a stealth approach, save scumming, a Quick Ball, and lots of luck, but if players manage to get this Pokemon early, they are practically set for the rest of the game.
Riolu
Another fan favorite,
Riolu, can be obtained relatively easily and in the earlier stages of the game (Around Lvl. 20) if players travel to the Cafe Soleil Area, near South Boulevard. Around the building, there's a ladder, and climbing it will lead to a small terrace where there's an Alpha Riolu. Save before climbing the ladder to prevent losing it, then defeat it and catch it.
Once players have secured Riolu, they should immediately take it to a Cafe or Restaurant, and drink some Tea or Coffee with it. After one or two times, Riolu's Friendship will reach the required level to evolve it into
Lucario, a fearsome Fighting/Steel-type Pokemon that can use a wide array of fist attacks, and it's ideal for Sneak Attacks and ambushes during the Z-A Royale. Needless to say, Mega Lucario is also available in the game, and by adding this Pokemon to the end-game team composition, players are going to sweep through every trainer on their way to the top.
Fletchling
Another 'easy-to-underestimate' Pokemon that players can catch early in the Wild Zone 1. Fletchling evolves into Fletchinder, and this Fire/Flying Pokemon evolves into the audacious Talonflame, one of the best Pokemon from Gen 6. Talonflame is not only fast, but dangerously powerful too. It has access to attacks like Flare Blitz, Brave Bird, and Steel Wing (most of them are Atk contact moves, which are broken on Legends Z-A).

With its powerful kit, Talonflame can carry through early and mid game, and if need be, become a decent attacker in late game, despite not having enough Base Stats to face off against powerhouses like Dragonite, Tyranitar, or Goodra. In the hands of a skilled Trainer, this Pokemon will break through most Royale Battles like a literal fireball.
Pansage, Pansear, Panpour
The Monkey Trio is back in Pokemon Legends Z-A: Pansear, Pansage, and Panpour are up for grabs, and players can find them roaming around rooftops, or perched on trees around Lumiose's streets and parks. These three monkeys are basically a complement to any starter combo, and they evolve into
Simisear,
Simisage, and
Simipour using Evolution Stones.
These Pokemon can learn a wide array of moves of their respective types, and will be useful up to mid-game, when battles get extremely complicated and players need to carefully choose their composition to avoid becoming someone else's Ticket Points.
