Although Pokemon Legends: Z-A is not exactly like other games in the series when it comes to battles, it's shaking up the competitive roster quite a bit with its new Mega Evolutions, and the results may be seen when Pokemon Champions releases. For now, competitive ranked battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A have been a mixed experience for many players, and the main reason is not related to the switch to real-time matches, but rather the fact that Legendary Pokemon like Xerneas, Zygarde, and Mewtwo became eligible for anyone to use. Now, the Mega Dimension DLC has released one of the most broken Pokemon ever made, thanks to a new Mega Evolution whose level of power is extremely unlikely to be matched in Gen 10.

One of the reasons why Mega Evolution as a gimmick is so beloved is that it grants new forms to some of the most popular Pokemon out there while also making them more powerful, whereas something like a regional form ends up having the same BST, just a different distribution of stats. Each Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A and past games adds 100 points of stats to a Pokemon's total and never changes the base HP, so doing it for critters with inherently high BST can create true powerhouses. Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Mega Golisopod is precisely that, and it can one-hit KO a lot of Pokemon already.

Why Pokemon Legends: Z-A's DLC Mega Golisopod is One of the Best Pokemon Ever Made

Pokemon Legends: Z-A's DLC adds 9 Legendary and 11 Mythical Pokemon to catch, and several of those will eventually become powerhouses in ranked battles in the game. However, Mega Golisopod is so powerful that it will do more than be powerful in ranked battles, but it could end up being one of the best Pokemon of all time in VGC, should Mega Evolutions be legal in the series through Pokemon Champions. Between incredible stats and type combination, Mega Golisopod may be the best new Pokemon in the past few years, not only in Legends: Z-A.

You can get Mega Golisopod from one of the Hyperspace Lumiose portals that reads "Mega Stone detected!". Wimpod is commonly available in 1-Star Bug-type portals, whereas Golisopod appears in 3-Star through 5-Star portals.

Mega Golisopod has a staggering 150 Attack, 175 Defense, and 120 Special Defense, making it exceptionally bulky while also being capable of dealing massive damage to opponents. On top of that, its type combination changes from the already good Bug/Water to Bug/Steel, like Scizor and Mega Scizor, losing its 2x weaknesses to Flying, Rock, and Electric in favor of a single weakness to Fire times four, while turning its 5 resistances into 8 plus one immunity.

However, this is a fantastic switch both offensively and defensively because Golisopod is normally strong against Fire, dealing STAB Water damage to Fire Pokemon. This means that one could decide to time Golisopod's Mega Evolution based on the opposing Pokemon on the field, dealing with Fire-type Pokemon in Legends: Z-A before Mega Evolving.

This is a luxury that critters like Scizor turning into Mega Scizor don't have, retaining their Bug/Steel type. Even then, Mega Evolving removes STAB damage from Water moves, but the move pool remains the same. For these reasons, combined with its fantastic stats, Mega Golisopod is one of the best Mega Evolutions in the series and one of the single best critters ever.

If that wasn't enough, Mega Golisopod gets access to Swords Dance, which increases its Attack, and it also learns plenty of coverage moves. With 252 EVs in Attack as well as 31 IVs, an Adamant Nature, and Swords Dance active, Mega Golisopod can:

One-hit KO any Mewtwo in Pokemon Legends: Z-A if it has 252 EVs in HP, including Mega Evolutions, with First Impression, Leech Life, X-Scissor, Pin Missile, or U-Turn.
One-hit KO Xerneas in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with Iron Head or Gunk Shot, provided it doesn't have more than 20 EVs in Defense with 252 EVs in HP, but still has a high chance of one-shotting Xerneas with up to 100 points in Defense and 252 in HP.
One-hit KO Charizard in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with Rock Slide, as well as Mega Charizard Y.
One-hit KO Primal Groudon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with Liquidation, and an 85% chance to OHKO with Waterfall.
One-hit KO Mega Darkrai in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with First Impression, Leech Life, X-Scissor, and Close Combat.

These are just some examples with a fairly basic calculation and EV spread, but in turn-based combat, Mega Golisopod can shine equally or even more due to the reduced emphasis on maxing HP EVs across the board. Its 40 base Speed is not great, but one of the best VGC strategies in Pokemon is to make low-Speed critters go first via Trick Room. Overall, Mega Golisopod is one of the best Pokemon ever made, and Gen 10 games will have a hard time clearing the bar it has set.
