Onix, o ne of the most popular Pokemon of the Rock-type, is part of the Pokedex in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and trainers who want to know how to get and evolve this Rock Snake into the mighty Steelix, should prepare themselves to dive into the late game, challenging the strongest Trainers of Lumiose City.
This guide will offer all the information players need to get themselves an Onix, as well as the Metal Coat needed to evolve it into Steelix. And for those who are ready to Mega Evolve this Pokemon, it will also reveal the location of the Mega Stone Steelixite, which is required to take Onix to its maximum level.
How to Get Onix in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Onix is a Pokemon that appears in the Wild Zone 14 during the day, and players need to look for burrowing holes in the ground to make it spawn. Be careful, though,
Excadrill and
Drilbur also live in these holes, and will attack Trainers who approach them.
Wild Zone 14 becomes available after completing Main Story Mission Nº20, so players would need to be around the mid-game before they can catch Onix and add it to their teams.
How to Get Metal Coat & Evolve Onix in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Onix is one of the two Pokemon that need a Metal Coat to evolve into their superior form (the other one is Scyther), and to evolve it into Steelix, players will have to progress through the game until they reach Main Mission Nº 35. And complete either Side Mission 101 (Steadfast as Steel) or Side Mission 114 (A Feather from Skarmory).
As players might have guessed, both of these Missions grant a Metal Coat as a reward for the effort, but sadly, they're both end-game missions, so getting one won't happen until players have progressed the Main Story.

Mega Steelix |
Once players have acquired the Metal Coat, they need to equip it to Onix and follow these steps to evolve it into Steelix:
- Open the party menu by pressing (X)
- Select Link Trade
- Enter code 0197-0197 for an Onix trade.
- Once the other Onix arrives, its evolution icon will be lit up.
- Select Onix in the menu and then 'Evolve.'
Players should remember that all evolutions are triggered manually, even those that have special conditions like trade.
To evolve Steelix into Mega Steelix, players need Steelixite. This Mega Stone can be bought at the Stone Emporium, located on Verte Main Street.
Mega Steelix is a powerful Tank that can survive a level of punishment that other Pokemon would not resist. Its ideal EV Spread is 252 HP/ 4 Def / 252 Sp. Def, taking into consideration that in Pokemon Legends Z-A,
Mega Steelix cannot take advantage of Sand Force since in Pokemon Legends Z-A, abilities do not exist, so take this into consideration when building Steelix. It would probably be best to build it with 252 HP/ 4 Def/ 252 Atk if players want to make use of Mega Steelix as a physical attacker.
