Pokemon Legends: Z-A allows players to customize their outfits and change their appearance from head to toe. Everything from changing into different clothes to getting a new haircut to even adding freckles and beauty spots to the main character’s skin is on the table.

That said, the ability to change your look is not available from the start of the game, and players have to meet certain prerequisites before the ability gets unlocked. Here’s the breakdown.

How to Change Your Outfit and Appearance in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players unlock the ability to change their outfit and appearance after progressing through the main story to a certain point and meeting an NPC named Naveen. This is an unmissable tutorial event, meaning you will automatically unlock it by playing the game normally very early on in the game.

After catching five Pokemon in Wild Zone 1 for research, you will be asked to head over to the Pokemon Research Lab to meet with Mable. Once you’ve talked to Mable, you’ll have to exit the Research Lab to head back to Hotel Z to meet up with Taunie. As soon as you exit the Lab, a cutscene will play out where you will encounter Naveen, a member of Team MZ, who will give you a new Hat. This unlocks the Outfits & Looks option, allowing you to customize your looks and change your appearance at will.

How to Change Your Outfit in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Open the pause menu by pressing X.
Press - to open the Outfits & Looks menu.
By default, the Outfits menu will open up.
Use L/R to cycle through the different outfit options and select the ones you like.
Press A to equip an outfit, then press + to confirm the change.
Exit out of the menu, and your new outfit will be worn.

Outfits can be purchased from various specialized boutique shops spread out across Lumiose City.

Some outfits have different variants. These are visible on the bottom of the screen when those outfits are selected and can be toggled on by pressing - to cycle between the different color schemes and designs.

Open the pause menu by pressing X.
Press - to open the Outfits & Looks menu.
Press ZR to switch to the Looks menu.
Use L/R to cycle through the different appearance options and select what you like to change.
Press A to select something, then press + to confirm.
Exit out of the menu, and your appearance changes will be applied.

Skin tones cannot be changed.

How to Change Hairstyles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

In order to customize their Hairstyles, players can visit any Hair Salon in Lumiose city. The Outfits & Looks menu does not have an option to alter player hairstyles on the fly.

There are four Hair Salons spread out across the city in different locations, offering a variety of hair customization options in exchange for Pokedollars. The earliest Hair Salon players can visit is on Vernel Avenue, directly west of Hotel Z.
