Fossil Pokemon are back in Pokemon Legends Z-A, and players are excited about picking one of the three available (for now) prehistoric species to resurrect and train. But unlocking the equipment required to revive Fossils doesn't happen straight away, so players need to fulfill certain requirements, as well as find where to get the actual genetic material to bring back to life some ancient creatures in Lumiose City.

In this step-by-step guide, players will learn where to restore Fossils and how to get the materials needed for this process. It also has information on which Pokemon are available for resurrection and whether they can be shiny or not, as well as how to unlock this feature in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

How to Restore Fossil Pokemon in Legends Z-A

The process to get Fossil Pokemon in Pokemon Legends Z-A is similar to that of previous generation games, where players need to bring genetic materials from fossils to the laboratory and resurrect the Pokemon using a machine. The place where this happens is the Pokemon Research Lab located near Wild Area 1, in South Lumiose. Players will naturally unlock this place during the introductory Mission, so now, the question is: How to unlock Fossil Restoration?

How to Unlock Fossil Restoration in Pokemon Legends Z-A

To unlock the Fossil Restoration gimmick in Pokemon Legends Z-A, players need to first complete up to the Main Story Mission 10 - The Secrets of Mega Evolution, and once they complete it and become F Rank, they will be able to check the Map and see that a Secondary Mission Icon has appeared over the Laboratory.

This corresponds to the Secondary Mission called "Restored from a Fossil," and to start it, players need to go to the 2nd Floor of the Laboratory and talk to the new NPC that has appeared next to the Machine in the middle of the room. The NPC will give players 20000 Poke Dollars to go and purchase one of the two Fossils available in Stone Emporium (it also sells Ancient Amber, but we will go back to this later).

Now head to Stone Emporium, located on Vernal Avenue, which is north of the Laboratory. Travel there and purchase either the Sail Fossil (Amaura) or the Jaw Fossil (Tyrunt), as each of these costs 20000. Once players have picked the first Fossil Pokemon they want to resurrect, they should go back to the Lab and give the Fossil to the Researcher. After a brief dialogue, he will proceed with the regeneration process, and as a result, Tyrunt or Amaura will be reborn.

All Available Fossils in Pokemon Legends Z-A & Can They Be Shiny?

Fossil Pokemon in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Now that the Fossil Regeneration Machine is unlocked, players can go ahead and resurrect as many Fossils as they want. The six available Fossil Pokemon in the game are Aerodactyl, Mega Aerodactyl, Tyrunt, Tyrantrum, Amaura, and Aurorus.

  • Amaura evolves into Aurorus at Level 39, during the Night.
  • Tyrunt evolves into Tyrantrum at Level 39 , during the Day.
  • Aerodactyl evolves into Mega Aerodactyl while holding the Aerodactylite.

All of these Pokemon are available in their Shiny versions, though getting one could be considered one of the most challenging feats in the game. Some might be thinking about farming money and purchasing tons of Fossils to aim for that Shiny Tyrunt, Amaura, or Aerodactyl, but before they spend hundreds of Poke Dollars, the truth is there's a simpler method: by saving the game, restoring the Fossil, and restarting.

The Shiny Charm effect doesn't affect Fossil Pokemon, so the odds remain unaltered despite having this Key Item. Players will have to rely on RNG/Trial and Error, since Fossils have 1 in 4060 chances of being Shiny.
