During the September 12 Nintendo Direct, Pokemon Legends: Z-A revealed the Mega Evolutions of Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja, the starter trio of Pokemon X and Y. The new Mega Evolution reveals ended a busy week for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, as the game continued to build momentum going into its October 16 launch.
The new Mega-Evolved Pokemon are the final evolutions of Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, the starters of Pokemon X and Y. Each of the Kalos starters is a dual-type monster, with their secondary types also being as effective as their main ones. For example, Greninja's Water and Dark pairing is effective against Delphox's Fire and Psychic types. Like other Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, a specific Mega Stone will be required to unlock these new forms. However, the method for obtaining these new Mega Stones for the Kalos starter trio remains unknown.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Reveals Mega Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja
Following the reveal of Mega Malamar after a viral marketing campaign, Pokemon Legends: Z-A showed off three new Mega Pokemon that trainers can add to their teams. Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja are coming to Pokemon Legends: Z-A. During the September 12 Nintendo Direct broadcast, a trailer featured gameplay of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the upcoming Pokemon title. With Mega Evolution being a major focus of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the trailer also reminded fans that previous Mega Pokemon will return to the franchise, including Mega Absol and Mega Ampharos. Additionally, Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A can be done more than once per battle, meaning trainers should make smart use of when to Mega Evolve their partners.
It is currently unclear if the Mega forms of Chesnaught, Delphox, or Greninja will retain their original types. However, the Nintendo Direct was not done with surprising Pokemon fans. Following the reveal of the Mega-Evolved Kalos starters, Pokemon Legends: Z-A unveiled Mega Raichu X and Y, along with the Mega Dimension DLC. The expansion will focus on the Mythical Pokemon called Hoopa, and will launch at a later date. The cosmetic items that come with pre-ordering the Mega Dimension DLC will be available in Pokemon Legends: Z-A once the game launches on October 16.
The launch of Pokemon Legends: Z-A will be part of a busy Q4 2025 release slate for Nintendo, as it joins titles like Kirby Air Riders and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Which Mega-Evolved Kalos starter trainers will utilize the most remains to be seen.
