As a part of Game Freak adapting Pokemon's traditional design ideas to fit an open-world game, Legends: Arceus reestablished Ride Pokemon as an integral feature for navigating future games. Though seen in earlier games like Pokemon Sun and Moon's Poke Ride, Legends: Arceus and Scarlet and Violet have since canonized Ride Pokemon as a key mechanic for traversing its open-world games. But while Scarlet and Violet had incorporated its mascot Legendary Pokemon as its respective Ride Pokemon, Legends: Arceus introduced this major feature by capitalizing on its Hisuian regional Pokemon instead.

Much like regional forms for its mismatched starter Pokemon's final evolutions, Legends: Arceus has set certain standards that Legends: Z-A is expected to meet, which includes the concept of Ride Pokemon. Given that a recent trailer has confirmed Legends: Z-A will feature an intergenerational trio of starter Pokemon, this could mean the game will continue to meet expectations set by Legends: Arceus. However, if there will be no new Pokemon or regional variants, as Legends: Z-A's starter Pokemon could get Mega Evolutions, then the game might be reworking the series' approach to Ride Pokemon as well.

Since Legends: Arceus' Hisuian Pokemon played a prominent part in the game's marketing, it seems possible that the latter scenario is true and Legends: Z-A is too close to the present-day for regional Pokemon of its own. Therefore, it could instead lean more on potential Mega Evolutions as a substitute for Lumiose City regional Pokemon.
