Summary

  • A fan artist shared Mega Evolution concepts for Feraligatr, Emboar, and Meganium, including new types and abilities.
  • Mega Evolution returns in Pokemon Legends: Z-A as the main battle mechanic.

A Pokemon Legends: Z-A fan artist took to social media to share their concepts of the Mega Evolution forms of Feraligatr, Emboar, and Meganium, the game's starter critters. The Pokemon Legends: Z-A fan artist also included new types and abilities to go with their conceptual Mega Evolution forms.

Initially introduced in Pokemon X and Y, Mega Evolution is a battle gimmick that allows certain Pokemon to transform temporarily into a Mega stage, which grants them a new appearance and occasionally changes their types and abilities. However, Mega Evolution requires a Pokemon to hold a matching keystone item, and the process can only happen once per battle. Mega Evolution was retired following the launch of Pokemon Sword and Shield, but it has returned as the main battle mechanic of Legends: Z-A. Since then, Pokemon fan artists have designed their own Mega Evolution concepts for Pokemon like Clefable which had not received one before.

Nintendo Clears Up Physical Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Confusion

Nintendo clears up the recent confusion surrounding physical Switch 2 Edition games and what is actually included within the box.

Despite some leaks surrounding the Mega Evolution forms of Pokemon Legends: Z-A's starters, a fan artist shared their take on what these new forms could look like. On the r/Pokemon subreddit, a Redditor named JJonnie shared their drawings of Mega Feraligatr, Emboar, and Meganium, along with their types and abilities. Starting with Mega Feraligatr, the Big Jaw Pokemon kept its Water typing but gained Poison as its secondary type. Mega Feraligatr's jaw and spines were colored purple, with glowing bands surrounding its arms and legs. Mega Feraligatr also gained a unique ability called Venom Eater, which would act like a Poison-type variant of similar abilities like Flash Fire.

Pokemon Fan Artist Draws Mega Feraligatr, Emboar, and Meganium Concepts

Mega Emboar, by contrast, lost its secondary Fighting type and was drawn as a pure Fire-type Pokemon. Mega Emboar was drawn as an egg-shaped bomb, with fire radiating from its body. Mega Emboar's Super Aftermath ability would allow it to use Explosion upon fainting. Although some Pokemon Legends: Z-A leaks stated that Mega Meganium would be a Grass and Fairy dual-type, JJonnie chose a different approach for the Herb Pokemon. JJonnie's Mega Meganium concept was designed as a Grass and Dragon type, with spiked petals across its eyes, neck, and tail. Mega Meganium's City Wrecker ability would allow it to deal serious damage to Steel Pokemon like Excadrill and Metagross. Pokemon fans thanked JJonnie for their contributions, and some praised the Mega Emboar design for its uniqueness.

Between the return of Mega Evolutions and a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Pokemon Legends: Z-A is one of the most anticipated games of 2025. What Pokemon fans will create next remains to be seen.
