Pokemon Legends: Z-A's online ranked battles are emerging as an exciting new way for players to test their skills head-to-head against others in a multiplayer setting. With the changes to Pokemon Legends: Z-A's battle system, online matches in the Z-A Battle Club take on a new form, pitting 4 players against each other in an active-time combat free-for-all. As more players are participating in these online matches, it's become clear that one Pokemon is a must-have for every team.
Players flocking to Pokemon Legends: Z-A's online battles for Mega Greninja will likely want a team that can ensure they reach rank K and earn the Greninjite reward. Unlike standard Pokemon Legends: Z-A battles, online matches are limited to 3 Pokemon per team and only allow players to switch out a limited number of times. Even with these regulations, Mega Gyarados is a contender for the best Pokemon for online battles in Legends: Z-A, and obtaining one is relatively effortless.
Mega Gyarados is the Meta for Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Online Ranked Battles
Gyarados is a fairly easy mon to add to a Pokemon Legends: Z-A team for a powerful boost early on in the game. Magikarp can be caught in Wild Zone 2, and evolves into Gyarados at Level 20. Getting to Level 20 is simple as well, since players can either use Exp. Candy or Tackle Mega Crystals for experience. Once players have a Gyarados, they can purchase its Mega Stone from Quasartico for 240 Mega Shards after completing main mission 10.

When it Mega Evolves, Gyarados loses its Flying typing to become Water/Dark type, giving it access to Dark-type STAB moves. As a Physical Attacker, Mega Gyarados can take full advantage of moves like Waterfall and Crunch for STAB damage, as well as Ice Fang for coverage against Flying and Dragon types. The last move slot should be reserved for either Protect or Earthquake, since Earthquake provides coverage against Electric types and Protect in Pokemon Legends Z-A is a powerful defensive tool that is difficult to use effectively.
Why Mega Gyarados is Such a Threat in Online Battles
What makes Mega Gyarados such a powerhouse in the Pokemon Legends: Z-A online battle meta is its impressive stat spread combined with solid type coverage. Mega Gyarados has fantastic defensive stats, boasting a base 109 Defense and 130 Special Defense, which, combined with its 95 base HP, allows it to tank hits very well. Survivability is the key to success in the Z-A Battle Club since it is a 4-player free-for-all, and Mega Gyarados has the bulk to receive hits and the Speed and Attack to dish them out in equal measure.

Mega Gyarados does gain more weaknesses over it's non-Mega-Evolved version. However, it has gains more resistances as well, and removes its 4x weakness to Electric types. It's also no longer immune to Ground types, but gains the Psychic-type immunity instead. These features combine to make Mega Gyarados a stout defensive mon in a battle mode that rewards bulky Pokemon. While the meta for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is still very young and could change drastically in the next few months, players looking to dive into the competitive scene today would be wise to bring a Mega Gyarados with them for the best chance at scoring a win.
