The recent bizarre, horror-like trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A revealed the game's second new Mega Evolution after Mega Dragonite as fellow Gen 1 critter Victreebel. Although the spooky nature of this trailer ended up being flipped on its head by the goofy design of Mega Victreebel, the new Mega's reveal wasn't the only thing the video showed. Eagle-eyed Pokemon Legends: Z-A fans may have spotted a brief teaser for one of Kalos' most infamous unsolved mysteries, adding much more of a creep factor than Mega Victreebel ever could.
With Pokemon Legends: Z-A being the follow-up to X and Y that Gen 6 never got, the game has plenty of opportunities to tie up loose threads left hanging in the Kalos Region. Some of X and Y's bigger lingering plot points, like AZ and Zygarde, seem like obvious candidates for central story beats in Legends: Z-A, but the game could also delve into some of X and Y's lesser-known mysteries as well. Perhaps the most popular example of an unsolved Kalos mystery is the Lumiose City ghost girl, whose presence in Legends: Z-A's pre-release marketing suggests her story may finally get an explanation.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Mega Victreebel Trailer Features a Hidden Ghost Girl Cameo
During the reveal trailer for Mega Victreebel, the ghost girl can be seen for a brief moment if fans keep a sharp eye out for her. In the scene just before the investigators are startled by their own reflections in a mirror, the ghost girl can be seen peering into the house through a window from outside. It's a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moment, but her spooky apparition helps to elevate the tension of the trailer while also serving as a nice Easter egg for X and Y fans who recall her appearance in the Gen 6 games.
The Lumiose City Ghost Girl is Pokemon X and Y's Biggest Unsolved Mystery
Pokemon X and Y's ghost girl legend originates from a creepy scene that can be triggered by entering an unmarked office building in Lumiose City. Players who take the building's elevator will find themselves followed by a Hex Maniac who appears to float along the ground, saying "No, you're not the one..." Before disappearing off-screen. This event has never been officially explained, but has spawned dozens of fan theories about her origins and who "the one" really is. Without any official explanation, Legends: Z-A has the chance to delve into the lore of this strange character, and her appearance in the recent Mega Victreebel trailer isn't the first instance of Pokemon Legends: Z-A referencing her.
The ghost girl saga continues in the other Gen 6 games, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where a similar Hex Maniac in Mt. Pyre repeats the same "No, you're not the one" phrase.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Seems to Be Teasing a Resolution to the Ghost Girl Saga
Hidden in the background of Pokemon Legends: Z-A's official Lumiose City map artwork is what appears to be this same Hex Maniac ghost girl. She can be seen in the upper right-hand corner of the map walking along a shopping mall in the same frame as a Chandelure. While this could simply be another Hex Maniac trainer, it doesn't seem like a coincidence after she reappears in the Mega Victreebel trailer, showing a clear pattern of hiding this character in Pokemon Legends: Z-A's pre-release marketing.
The Kalos Region is home to some of the spookier elements of the Pokemon series, with the Scary House on Route 14 adding to the unsettling mysteries of the region. With Pokemon Legends: Z-A being confined to Lumiose City, it seems more likely that the ghost girl will get a follow-up quest rather than something like the Scary House. Legends: Z-A's detective side quests with Emma seem like the perfect chance to track and solve the mystery of this ghost girl, and put this 12-year-long enigma to bed.
