Pokemon Legends Z-A, the most recent mainline entry in this beloved monster-catching series, has become a huge critical and commercial success in less than a week. While most fans initially criticized its upcoming DLC expansion, Mega Dimension, because Nintendo announced it before the game even launched, Legends: Z-A turned out to be so good that now they can’t help but feel very excited about it.

5 Pokemon Games Better Than Legends Z-A (In Certain Areas)

The following games surpass Pokemon Legends Z-A in key areas, making them well worth playing for fans of the latest release.

This is definitely one of the best Pokemon titles of the last decade, but there are still many aspects about it that could be improved or expanded in many ways. The Mega Dimension DLC has the potential to elevate Pokemon Legends: Z-A from an excellent game to an absolute masterpiece, so here are eight hypothetical additions that, if pulled off correctly, may help Game Freak achieve that title with flying colors.

New Mega Evolutions Of Kalos Pokemon

There Are Still So Many Gen Six Pokemon That Desperately Need An Upgrade

There’s no doubt that the #1 most exciting new feature of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is its collection of brand-new Mega Evolutions that gave a bunch of older Pokemon a decent fighting chance. From ones that were years in the making (like Mega Dragonite) to cool-looking new forms of Generation Six Pokemon (like Mega Hawlucha) and even a few odd experimental ones (like Mega Starmie), these new Mega Evolutions have breathed new life into a lot of classic creatures.

However, there are still so many other Kalos Pokemon in Legends: Z-A’s Pokedex that feel like they should have received new Mega Evolutions, and yet, they haven’t, with some of the most notorious examples being Aurorus, Tyrantrum, Clawitzer, Noivern, Goodra, Yveltal, and Xerneas. Fortunately, it has already been confirmed that Mega Dimension will introduce two new Mega Evolutions for Raichu, so it’s very unlikely that those will be the only ones the DLC will add to the game.

The Return Of Older Pokemon

The Game’s Pokedex Needs A Major Shake-Up

A trainer relaxing with their Pokemon - Pokemon Legends Z-A

Even though the entire game takes place in Lumiose City, Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Pokedex struck a perfect balance between featuring every Generation Six Pokemon and a bunch of Pokemon from other Generations that came before and after. Nevertheless, there are still a lot of popular creatures that are oddly missing from this Pokedex, including the Hoenn Starters (all of which can Mega Evolve), the Zubat line, and the Flygon line.

The Mega Dimension DLC will heavily feature Hoopa and its many hoop-shaped portals. The last time this dimension-hopping Mythical Pokemon had a prominent role in a game (in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, to be precise), it made multiple Legendaries and Mythicals available for catching, so it's most likely that the same thing will happen in Legends: Z-A’s DLC. However, as thrilling as catching these elusive legends is, it’s important that Mega Dimension features a fair share of regular Pokemon as well, especially if it has brand-new environments to explore.

Brand-New Pokemon

Fixing One Of Legends: Z-A’s Biggest Flaws

Pokemon Legends: Z-A has been marketed as the “Mega Evolution game” pretty much from day one, so naturally, it focused heavily on the reintroduction of this beloved battle mechanic that had been removed from the mainline series back in Generation Seven. However, these powerful new forms are no proper replacement for regular new Pokemon, and this is an aspect in which this new game pales in comparison to its predecessor, Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Many fans were hoping Legends: Z-A would add either Kalosian forms of beloved Pokemon (similarly to Legends: Arceus’ Hisuian forms) or brand-new cross-generational evolutions (like Wyrdeer, Kleavor, or Basculegion), but this never came to fruition, as the game introduced zero new Pokemon, only new Mega Evolutions. Game Freak has the perfect chance to right this wrong in the upcoming DLC, as it could add a bunch of never-before-seen creatures to the game, especially if Hoopa’s involvement allows the player to visit other locations outside Kalos.

More Boss Fights

Fighting Rogue Mega Evolved Pokemon Should Be A Prominent Part Of The DLC

Fighting a Rogue Mega Banette - Pokemon Legends Z-A

Pokemon Legends: Arceus introduced a new style of action-based boss fights in the form of Noble Pokemon, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A perfected that innovative formula in order to make the battles against the Rogue Mega Evolved Pokemon some of the most challenging and thrilling in the entire series. Sadly, not every Mega Evolution got to star in a boss fight of its own, so it would be fascinating to see the remaining few being implemented into one in the Mega Dimension DLC.

Additionally, previous DLCs — like Sword and Shield’s The Crown Tundra or Scarlet and Violet’s The Indigo Disk – focused heavily on raid battles featuring Legendary Pokemon. It’s always possible that Mega Dimension will follow this tradition and make it so any new Legendaries and/or Mega Evolutions have to be defeated in real-time boss fights before they can even be caught.

True Wild Areas

It’d Be Great To Actually Catch Pokemon In The Wild Again

Catching a Wild Scatterbug in a WIld Zone - Pokemon Legends Z-A

Since the main setting of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Lumiose City, is a populated urban area, wild Pokemon are relegated to living in Wild Zones, small secluded areas of the map that had been abandoned by humans. This mechanic actually works surprisingly well with the game’s addictive gameplay loop, but Mega Dimension would still be the perfect opportunity to spice things up a little bit.

Legends: Z-A’s Wild Zones can feel very restrictive at times, whereas the expansive semi-open-world maps of Legends: Arceus were a joy to explore and find wild Pokemon in. Furthermore, the Mega Dimension DLC should add one (or more) new areas with their own collection of wild Pokemon, while Lumiose City could still function as a hub that players can go back to anytime they want to face other human trainers.

New Areas To Explore

Walking Around Lumiose City Is Getting Boring Already

One of the biggest criticisms Pokemon Legends: Z-A has received since launch is the fact that the entire game takes place entirely within Lumiose City. Truth be told, this restriction has allowed Game Freak to make a more concise map with little-to-no bugs or glitches (which is a breath of fresh air after Scarlet and Violet’s impressive but technically messy Paldean map), but it also led to the environments feeling way too similar to each other, not to mention that other iconic locations from the Kalos region are completely inaccessible to the player.

If there’s one thing the Mega Dimension DLC needs to add to make this game even better, it is a bunch of brand-new environments with their own geography, atmosphere, greenery, and fauna, especially if it’s yet another modern depiction of a beloved Kalos city or town, like Anistar City or Geosenge Town. This single change would add some much-needed variety to the game, and it’d also keep things interesting and exciting for players who want to do more exploration and research, and less fighting.

More Returning Characters

A Lot Of Important Kalosian Figures Were Absent From The Base Game

A collage of Kalos characters that could return in the Mega Dimension DLC, Sycamore, Clemont, Diantha and Looker - Pokemon Legends Z-A

Since the story of Pokemon Legends: Z-A takes place five whole years after the events of Pokemon X and Y, longtime players got to reunite with some of that game’s most iconic and beloved characters, like Emma, AZ, and many more. However, a lot of important figures from the Kalos region were still oddly missing from this adventure, even those that usually reside in Lumiose City.

Professor Sycamore is doing research in another region and has been replaced by Mable; Detective Looker is working in Alola; Clemont and Bonnie were forced to leave Prism Tower by Quasartico Inc.; Champion Diantha is allegedly busy with her acting career, so on and so forth. Being able to meet up with any of these iconic characters in Mega Dimension would be both exciting and satisfying, and considering how unpredictable Game Freak usually is, it wouldn’t be surprising if other characters from other generations are featured in the DLC as well, like Leon from Galar or Anabel from Hoenn.

A Small Taste Of Generation Ten

The Next Pokemon Generation Is Closer Than It Seems

The Paldean starters at the beginning of the game, Sprigatito, Quaxly and Fuecoco - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Some Pokemon fans may not be aware of this, but everything points to the imminent reveal of Generation Ten taking place in early 2026, especially considering that February will mark the franchise’s 30th Anniversary (around the time Mega Dimension is scheduled to come out). It’s highly likely that the start of the next generation will be released sometime next year, so Game Freak could give fans a small taste of it by adding some sort of hint in the upcoming Legends: Z-A DLC.

It wouldn’t be the first time Pokemon hints at the existence of a future generation before it's formally announced, so something very small related to Generation Ten (like an item, a poster, or a short text description) could easily allow fans to speculate and theorize for months on end until the eventual release of those hypothetical games. But, of course, Game Freak could easily go the extra mile and add a Generation Ten character or Pokemon to the Mega Dimension DLC (even if it can’t be caught), which the fan base would certainly appreciate a lot.
