Pokemon Legends: Z-A will need a water starter, and Squirtle may be the best option out of the potential candidates. Pokemon has come out with a new Water starter in every generation, so Pokemon Legends: Z-A will have a healthy amount of options to choose from. Among them, Squirtle is notable not only for being the original Water-type starter Pokemon, but it may be the one with the most potential for the role. Pokemon Legends: Z-A will probably have as many surprises as its predecessor did, and Squirtle feels like a Pokemon that should be able to fit right in.

In a twist, Pokemon Legends: Arceus' starter Pokemon are comprised of starters from three different regions: Rowlet from Alola, Cyndaquil from Johto, and Oshawott from Unova. While none of these Pokemon were new, they did still help to add some personality to the millennia-old Hisui region. Most notably, all of these starters got new Hisuian forms of their final evolutions with new types, movesets, and designs. While few details about Pokemon Legends: Z-A are out so far, it would not be surprising to see this dynamic repeated. That will make the game's selection of starter Pokemon just as important as its predecessor's.

Squirtle Holds a Lot of Potential as a Water Starter in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Squirtle is Particularly Iconic Among Pokemon's Water-Type Starters

Back in Kanto, Squirtle became the first Water-type starter in Pokemon, and still remains one of the more memorable ones. A part of that status comes from being the first of its kind, which would naturally give it plenty of recognition. In addition, Squirtle also benefited from the original anime prominently featuring it as a part of Ash's team, complete with an entertaining personality and the popular Squirtle Squad sunglasses. Later starters, both Water and otherwise, have notable fanbases, with some such as Greninja proving particularly popular. If recognition is a factor in determining Pokemon Legends: Z-A's starters, then Squirtle should easily be a contender.

A New Form For Blastoise Would Be A Sight in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Pokemon Legends: Z-A including Squirtle would mean even more than catching Squirtle in a new Pokemon game. Much like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, it could mean a brand-new form for Blastoise. After all, out of the three Kanto starters, Blastoise was the only one not to eventually become a dual-type Pokemon. A new form like what Pokemon Legends: Z-A's starters got would open a world of possibilities. Given that Blastoise is a huge turtle equipped with cannons, there are several ways that a dual typing could augment its abilities. An appearance in Pokemon Legends: Z-A could give Blastoise a well-deserved new dimension.

Squirtle Would Add Strategic Variety to Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Squirtle could also cover a niche that wasn't seen in any of Pokemon Legends: Arceus' starters. While there are several Pokemon that act as tanks, none of them were among Pokemon Legends: Arceus' starters. Although it only has average health, Blastoise's strong defensive stats have the making of a solid tank, and an appearance in Pokemon Legends: Z-A could further push that role with an alternate form. Not to mention, it would offer another strategic option for players to choose from. Adding Squirtle to Pokemon Legends: Z-A's starter list would bring a new dynamic for players compared to the last installment.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A will probably work with pre-existing starters once more, and if so, Squirtle would be an excellent option. Whatever players will find in Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Lumiose City will have a high bar to clear after the grand adventures of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Whatever the case, may be, the player's starter Pokemon will be just as important as always. Squirtle has a lot of potential among the series' existing water starters , so Pokemon Legends: Z-A has good reason to take on Squirtle as one of its three selections.
