Pokemon Legends: Z-A may be shaking up the series' formula in more ways than one after its predecessor, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, established a new gameplay loop for players to experience. While the core of Pokemon Legends: Z-A may revolve around exploring Lumiose City's Wild Zones and capturing critters by day, the latest trailer for the game revealed that by night, things are a different story entirely. After the sun sets, players can engage in battles with other trainers participating in the Z-A Royale tournament, but one new mechanic could turn these battles on their head.
The way battles play out in Pokemon Legends: Z-A may feel quite different from any entry in the past, as the game is ditching the traditional turn-based formula in favor of active time battles. With these more dynamic battles, Pokemon Legends: Z-A seems to build upon the action RPG elements of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which rewarded players with taking a measured approach to capturing mons. However, Legends: Z-A seems to be applying a similar philosophy to trainer battles, allowing players to strike enemy Pokemon first in a surprise attack that puts a twist on an iconic aspect of the series.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A's New Night Mechanics Are Begging For One Feature
Pokemon Legends: Z-A got a new trailer today, and its nighttime tournament has the perfect excuse to add one online feature.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Gives Players a Taste of Catching Trainers By Surprise
Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Surprise Attack Mechanic Puts the Shoe on the Other Foot for Once
Longtime Pokemon fans are likely well aware of what happens when they're spotted by another trainer; they tend to get roped into a battle, whether they're prepared or not. Walking into another trainer's line of sight in past games has almost always resulted in a battle, but Pokemon Scarlet and Violet changed this tendency to make it so players themselves would have to approach fellow trainers to request a battle. Now, Pokemon Legends: Z-A takes this feature a step further and allows players to unleash a surprise attack against unsuspecting trainers, giving Pokemon NPCs a taste of their own medicine.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A will feature a gauge that shows players how close they are to being detected by another trainer, so stealth will be the key to a successful surprise attack.
While not every trainer would issue a battle challenge on sight in older generations, like Gym Leaders, for example, the infamous reputation the series has gained for forcing players to battle has often made the games feel like a stealth mission when a player's team is hurt, and they're out of potions. Although ambushing another trainer from behind seems like something Team Rocket would do, it's the logical conclusion of Pokemon Legends: Z-A's shift to an active-time battle system. With the surprise attack mechanic opening the door for new battle strategies, combat in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is sure to look quite different from any past entry.
How the Surprise Attack Mechanic Could Be a Game-Changer for Battles
Launching a surprise attack against an opponent in Pokemon Legends: Z-A gives the player a massive benefit in battle. Players who successfully avoid detection and initiate a surprise attack will deal a guaranteed Critical Hit to the opponent's monster, while leaving it temporarily unable to attack. This strategy could allow players to even knock out an opposing mon before it has a chance to retaliate.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus introduced a variety of unique items to help players utilize stealth when attempting to catch certain critters, so adding a similar reward for utilizing stealth in trainer battles could open the door for even more items to be introduced in Legends: Z-A. Such a drastic shift in the traditional battle formula of the franchise would warrant supporting mechanics like items to help improve the player's stealth or give them some level of protection against being surprised by an opponent's attack. Although it's unclear if the surprise attack mechanic will persist beyond Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it presents the perfect chance for players to experience a more aggressive form of battle.
