Giving your partners customized nicknames is a mechanic that has been present in the Pokemon franchise since its inception, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A is no different. Players can give captured Pokemon unique nicknames, personalizing these companions and making them unique in the process.
However, unlike older Pokemon games where players had to locate NPCs like the Name Rater to give their captured Pokemon nicknames, Legends: Z-A takes the middleman out of the process, making it much more accessible to all players. That said, it is easy to miss the tutorial that explains how it all works, which may lead some players to be confused about exactly how to do it. Here’s the breakdown.
Pokemon Legends Z-A: How to Change Your Outfit & Appearance
Pokemon Legends: Z-A allows players to customize their outfits as well as change their appearance from head to toe. Here’s how.
How to Give Pokemon Nicknames in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
You can give your Pokemon a nickname in Pokemon Legends: Z-A from the pause menu. Here’s how:
- Open the pause menu by pressing X on your Nintendo Switch 1/2 controller.
- Open “Boxes” from the left pane.
- Find and select the Pokemon you would like to give a nickname to.
- Press A on the Pokemon to open the context menu.
- Scroll down to “Change nickname” and press A again to open the naming screen.
- Input a nickname for your Pokemon, confirm, and exit the menu.
- Now, your Pokemon will have its new given nickname.
To change the name again, simply repeat the process from step 1 and you’ll be able to choose another one. There is no limit to how many times you can rename a Pokemon in Legends: Z-A.
You can also change Pokemon nicknames by pressing - in the Summary screen.
Traded Pokemon cannot be given nicknames. This includes Pokemon you obtain by trading with NPCs in Lumiose City, like the
Heracross named Bois, which can be obtained by trading a Pikachu with an NPC.
