Pokemon Legends: Z-A has a hard cap on the number of Mega Shards players can obtain, and the limit of 999 can be easily hit by trainers who lose track of time. In light of this, a Pokemon Legends: Z-A player sparked a discussion on the Mega Shard cap on social media, where other trainers responded with different tips on how to spend them.
Throughout the map of Lumiose City, Pokemon Legends: Z-A players will encounter various pink and purple Mega Crystal formations that appear on the ground and on the sides of buildings. These Mega Crystal formations can be broken into collectible Mega Shards by commanding a Pokemon to attack them. Attacks that deal area-of-effect damage, like Flamethrower or Thunderbolt, can hit multiple Mega Crystal formations clumped together. Additionally, Flying Pokemon can reach other Mega Crystals that can appear in some hard-to-reach places.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Mega Shard Cap Is Easy To Hit
While Mega Shards can be easily collected when exploring Lumiose City, some Pokemon Legends: Z-A players can hit the limit of 999 before realizing that they are wasting time collecting more. On the Pokemon subreddit, a Redditor named GimlySonOfGloin said they lost several hours of collecting Mega Shards due to forgetting that they hit the cap of 999 some time beforehand. GimlySonOfGloin then stated that Pokemon Legends: Z-A players should either spend them on items like Mega Stones or stop collecting them if there is nothing that players want.
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, some Mega Stones can be obtained by defeating Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokemon throughout the main story, like the Absolite from Rogue Mega Absol, while others can be purchased for Mega Shards at Quasartico Inc.'s headquarters for varying amounts. For example, the Salamencite for Mega Salamence costs 360 Mega Shards, while the Lucarionite for Mega Lucario requires 240 Mega Shards.
Pokemon trainers replied by stating that, after obtaining all the Mega Stones, excess Mega Shards can be spent on small, medium, and large EXP Candy during the post-game of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Given that each size of EXP Candy gives a fixed amount of experience points, the Mega Shard costs between getting small, medium, or large EXP Candy pieces is roughly the same amount of EXP per Mega Shard spent.
Additionally, trainers can spend five Mega Shards at the Rust Syndicate to reset their Pokemon's effort values (EVs) before using items like Iron or Calcium to build them back up. With Pokemon Legends: Z-A making changes to the game's ranked battle system, it remains to be seen if any changes to the game's Mega Shard limit will be made as well.
