Additionally, Metal Coat plays an important role in the evolution of two Pokemon, and that is likely to be the reason that most players want to get their hands on it. There is only one Metal Coat that can be obtained before rolling Pokemon Legends: Z-A's credits, and it is not even available until very close to the end. As such, players should not expect to have both Steelix and Scizor in their squad until the post-game.

Side Missions

There are two Side Missions that award one Metal Coat upon completion. The first is Side Mission 101: Steadfast as Steel, which becomes available during Main Mission 35, near the end of Pokemon Legends: Z-A's story. The second is Side Mission 114: A Feather from Skarmory, and players can initiate it after beating the game.

Vendor

There are two Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A that can be made to evolve with a Metal Coat, and they are as follows:

Onix evolves into Steelix
Scyther evolves into Scizor

For the uninitiated, here is how to perform those evolutions:

Select the Pokemon, in a Box or the Current Party, and choose the "give an item to hold" option.
Select the Metal Coat from the Other Items tab.
Navigate to the Menu (press X), and select Link Play.
Choose Link Trade and then Faraway Players.
Enter the Pokemon Legends: Z-A Link Code the community has agreed upon for these two Pokemon (0197-0197 for Onix and 0176-0176 for Scyther).
Once you connect with another player, select your Onix/Scyther to perform the trade and initiate the evolution.
