Status effects in Pokemon Legends: Z-A work a little bit differently from games in the series. Due to PLZA’s alternative real-time battle system, applying the same rules as those in the turn-based games would be a bad idea, which is why a few changes have been made to keep these effects balanced and relevant.
This guide covers every status condition in Legends: Z-A, how it works, how to cure your Pokemon when they are afflicted, as well as how best to take advantage of them when you are the one applying the effects. Here’s the breakdown.
Pokemon Legends Z-A: Best Tips & Tricks

Persim Berry Heal Powder |
Full Heal, Full Restore, Lum Berry, and Lumiose Galette can be used to cure all status conditions.
Additionally, the move Safeguard prevents all status conditions when used. The Safeguard TM is obtained as a reward for reaching Rank F in Royale Z-A as a part of a main mission in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Poison and Burn are both extremely useful against Alpha Pokemon and Rogue Megas.
How Does Paralysis Work in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
When a Pokemon is paralyzed, the speed of its movement in the overworld is reduced, making it take longer for the Pokemon to move from one spot to another. The Paralyzed status does not stop the Pokemon from performing any moves; it only reduces movement speed. The reduced speed from Paralysis does not have any correlation with the Speed stat.
Electric-type Pokemon are immune to Paralyze.
How Does Drowsy (Sleep) Work in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Sleep is replaced by the Drowsy status, which increases the cooldown of moves. Unlike in other Pokemon games, a Pokemon with this status can still move and perform moves. Drowsy is immediately applied to a Pokemon when it is hit with a sleep-inducing move like Hypnosis.
How Does Poison Work in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Poison applies a damage over time effect to a Pokemon that ticks roughly every three seconds (real time). This effect does not dissipate until the affected Pokemon has fainted.
Badly Poisoned is a more potent version of Poison that increases the per-tick damage from the status effect. It can be applied using moves like Toxic.
Poison and Steel-type Pokemon are immune to Poison.
How Does Burn Work in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Burn applies a damage over time effect to a Pokemon that ticks roughly every three seconds, similar to Poison. It also reduces the effectiveness of physical moves. This effect does not dissipate until the affected Pokemon has fainted.
Fire-type Pokemon are immune to Burn.
How Does Freeze Work in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Freeze stops a Pokemon from performing any actions for roughly 10 seconds, preventing all movement. Using Fire-type moves on a frozen Pokemon will immediately thaw them out, ending the Frozen status early.
Ice-type Pokemon are immune to Freeze.
How Does Confusion Work in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Confusion makes a Pokemon sometimes unable to move in the intended direction when commanded. So, if you order a Pokemon to use a move to attack another Pokemon, a circle will appear on the ground to indicate where you’ve commanded that Pokemon to go. If the Pokemon is confused, there is a chance it will not move toward the ordered location, similar to when a Pokemon disobeys its trainer.
Unlike other games, a Confused Pokemon will not hurt itself in its Confusion.
Pokemon with the ability Own Tempo cannot be affected by Confusion.
