A talented Pokemon and Metroid fan has shared a piece of fanart that looks like it came straight out of a 1990s gaming magazine. The nostalgic artwork has fans reminiscing about the early days of Pokemon and Metroid.

Pokemon and Metroid don't get mashed up extremely often in official Nintendo games, but one stand-out is Super Smash Bros. While plenty of game characters have been incorporated into the fighter, Pikachu and Samus had a unique partnership in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where the two teamed up in the game's Adventure Mode, The Subspace Emissary. This new fanart shows the two in cooperation once again, albeit for a cuter reason.

Pokemon and Metroid fan Gaspard90s has shared a piece of fanart depicting miniaturized Pikachu and Samus working together over a classic Game Boy. The image shows Pikachu attaching what looks like a battery jumper cable to its cheek, while it holds out the other end for Samus to use. Meanwhile, Samus appears to be popping one of the Game Boy's scattered batteries out of her arm cannon, presumably to recharge it with Pikachu's help. The artist explained in a comment that the artwork was created on paper with watercolors, which was then scanned, which lends some authenticity to its nostalgic style that's reminiscent of classic Pokemon watercolor artwork by the franchise's original artist, Ken Sugimori.

Pokemon and Metroid Fans Celebrate Cute Artwork

Numerous fans have commented on Gaspard90s's fanart, praising their style and the similarity to classic official Pokemon art. One commenter was happy to see the older-style depiction of Pikachu, which fans lovingly refer to as "Fat Pikachu." Most, however, were surprised to realize that it was a piece of fanart, and not an official advertisement from the 1990s. For fans of the era, it's easy to imagine the art appearing in a gaming magazine ad, promoting the games or even the Game Boy.

Back in the present, fans of both of these franchises are gearing up for new releases. The July 22 Pokemon Presents revealed new games, as well as more details regarding the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which has a release date set for October 16, 2025. The long-awaited Metroid Prime 4 is also set to launch in 2025, though it still lacks a solid release date. With no further announcements despite the year being half over, fans of the franchise have begun to worry that the game will be delayed yet again.
