Summary

  • A talented Pokemon fan created a more realistic interpretation of Mew, emphasizing its feline characteristics and behavior.
  • While Mew's design and "meow" sound are cat-inspired, there are other Pokemon in the franchise that more closely resemble typical house cats.
  • The fan's artwork of Mew as a sleeping cat, reminiscent of classic Pokemon trading cards, received praise and appreciation for capturing the essence of the beloved Mythical Pokemon.

One talented Pokemon fan reimagined Mew as a more realistic-looking and acting cat. While the Mythical creature takes design inspiration from the house cat, it doesn't act much like a feline outside its meow-like sound it makes while calling out its own name. In both Japan and the West, Mew's name is based on the sounds kittens make. But again, while this onomatopoeia and the overall design are obviously feline-inspired, there are certainly other creatures in the Pokemon franchise that act far more like a typical house cat.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Grass-type starter Sprigatito is a perfect recent example of a more obvious cat-inspired creature. Even its name is presumably a play on the words sprig and the Spanish word for cat. Just a couple of generations ago, Litten (perhaps, an even more on-the-nose name) debuted as the Fire-type starter in Pokemon Sun and Moon. They are hardly unique, however, as the franchise has a long history of introducing both cat and dog-like Pokemon. Now, one of the originals is getting a bit of a makeover thanks to one fan artist.

Reddit user SenZephyr recently shared their stunning painting of Mythical Pokemon Mew acting even more like a realistic cat. In typical feline fashion, Mew is sleeping curled into a ball with its head resting upon its legs. The artist even reimagined their work of art as promotional trading cards, both standard and holographic.

The hand-painted look of the art style feels reminiscent of classic Pokemon trading cards that didn't follow the same style and conventions as the anime or the video game series. Needless to say, this fan did right by one of the best Mythical Pokemon of all time.

Despite being around since the '90s, Mew has remained popular and relevant thanks to media and in-game events. Just recently, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players received Mew as a free Mystery Gift for a promotional event that also brought its longtime rival Mewtwo into the game.

Luckily, with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's second wave of DLC coming in December, players will have even more opportunities to train and battle with their respective Mew. The new expansion, The Indigo Disk, launches on December 14, 2023.
