Summary

  • Pokemon fan creates a unique design for Mimikyu inspired by popular Vocaloid character, Hatsune Miku.
  • Fans of Pokemon and Vocaloid show appreciation for the fan-made crossover design, dubbing it "Hatsune Mimikyu."
  • Mimikyu's popularity leads fans to suggest more variations in its disguises based on other popular Pokemon for added appeal.

A Pokemon fan has given Mimikyu a redesign, swapping its typical Pikachu disguise for one of Hatsune Miku. The Pokemon crossover work has already gained attention from fans of Pokemon and the Vocaloid alike.

Hatsune Miku is a character that a lot of people have likely seen but may not fully understand. Hatsune Miku is a Vocaloid, or a type of audio voicebank that can sing whatever it's programmed to. There are many different Vocaloids and similar voicebanks, but Miku is extremely popular and has gained a life of her own, leading to everything from holographic Hatsune Miku public performances to anime based on Hatsune Miku.

There is a popular anime series that features insane collaborations, but it is unlikely to be licensed globally in the near future.

Now, a fan of both, called ssawasawa, has given Mimikyu a new look based on the popular virtual idol. The work does a great job of mashing up the two designs, with Mimikyu's new disguise strongly resembling Miku, including her iconic gray and turquoise outfit, long twin-tails, and pink square hair ornaments. Given that Mimikyu apparently chose its original Pokemon disguise because it wanted to find friends, and Pikachu is popular, it's not hard to imagine that Mimikyu could choose a disguise like this, perhaps following the Hatsune Miku and Pokemon crossover collaboration.

Pokemon Fans Love Mimikyu's New Disguise

Many who enjoy Pokemon, Hatsune Miku, or both have shared praise with the artist for their creation. Plenty have called the Pokemon and its disguise cute, while another seemed pleased that Mimikyu was happy. One mused that Mimikyu was "real" for this disguise, saying that they'd also like to be Miku. Numerous fans dubbed this version of the Pokemon "Hatsune Mimikyu," mashing up the two names perfectly.

While Mimikyu is pretty consistent in how it looks in the Pokemon games and anime, fans have come up with all kinds of Mimikyu redesigns over the years. Mimikyu's story seems to appeal to fans, with the Pokemon doing its best to hide its horrifying appearance with its normal Pikachu disguise. Between the popularity of Mimikyu itself and the fanart created for it, some fans have suggested that it would be neat if Mimikyu had variations that used different disguises. While giving Mimikyu a look based off of every single Pokemon would likely be excessively difficult for development, adding a few looks based off of some of the most popular Pokemon in the franchise could further add to Mimikyu's appeal and add a little extra difficulty for players to catch 'em all.
