Pokemon fans should keep an eye on August 20, as that's when Gamescom Opening Night Live takes place. For Pokemon enthusiasts who may not be aware of what it is, Gamescom is essentially Europe's equivalent of E3/Summer Game Fest, with the event home to all kinds of big announcements and reveals over the years. This year's Gamescom will technically take place from August 21 to 25, but the event will kick off with a special Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation hosted by The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley.

As one of the year's biggest gaming events, many major companies make sure to attend Gamescom to show off their upcoming products. However, some of the industry's biggest companies will actually be skipping this year's Gamescom. It's been confirmed that PlayStation will not be at Gamescom this year, and neither will Nintendo. But while Nintendo itself won't be at Gamescom, a company associated with it has been confirmed for the event.

As confirmed by the official Gamescom Twitter account, The Pokemon Company will be at Gamescom this year. This opens the door to the possibility of some kind of Pokemon announcement happening at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20, though fans should keep their expectations in check. It's entirely possible that The Pokemon Company's involvement at Gamescom will be restricted to the in-person event. Still, there's now at least a slim chance that a Pokemon announcement could happen at Gamescom, and so fans should consider tuning in to Opening Night Live just in case.

It's unclear exactly what The Pokemon Company will be showcasing at Gamescom, regardless if it has something new to announce during Opening Night Live or not. There are multiple live service Pokemon games that could be featured, like Pokemon GO, Pokemon Sleep, and Pokemon Unite. Most Pokemon fans are anxious to learn more about upcoming Switch game Pokemon Legends: Z-A. It's possible, though unlikely, that The Pokemon Company will utilize Gamescom to show off Legends: Z-A, which so far has only had a CG trailer released for it.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A is releasing in 2025, and so one would imagine that trailers and information on the game will start being released at a steadier pace as we get closer to the new year. Traditionally, big Pokemon reveals and announcements have been reserved for Pokemon Presents events, so fans shouldn't hold their breath for the game to be featured at Gamescom. Still, Pokemon will have some kind of presence at the big show; it's just a matter of what will be shown off and if that involvement will extend to Opening Night Live on August 20.
