The Pokemon X/Y Grass-type starter, Chespin, can now be obtained in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. Its final evolution is Chesnaught, a Grass/Fighting-type. While it may not be as popular as the other Kalos starters, Froakie and Fennekin, the Chespin-line's TM learn pool can make it quite versatile in battle.
Adding a Chespin to the team (or PC Box) in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet will require taking part in a 7-star Raid, or the help of Pokemon HOME and Pokemon GO. Trainers that want a Chespin at the start of their journey will need to transfer one from Pokemon GO. Those that don't mind waiting should first complete S/V's main story and post game.
Updated on December 28, 2023 by Renri Seong: Chespin is the Grass-type starter of the Kalos region, and when it reaches its final evolution, it becomes the Grass/Fighting-type Chesnaught. Before the release of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet's Indigo Disk DLC, Chespin and its evolutions were compatible with Scarlet/Violet, but were unable to be caught anywhere in Paldea or Kitakami (Teal Mask). With Indigo Disk, it is now possible to find and catch Chespin in Terarium. However, getting Chespin to appear will require a large amount of Blueberry Points (BP). You'll also want to be in the postgame of Scarlet/Violet's main story. The following guide has been updated to include methods of obtaining Chespin in Indigo Disk without transferring or trading.
How to Evolve Galarian Slowpoke into Slowbro and Slowking (Pokemon Scarlet & Violet)
With the addition of more Pokemon into Pokemon Scarlet and Violet via the latest DLC, Galarian Slowpoke can be encountered.
Where to Find Chespin (Indigo Disk)
How to Evolve Chespin
Finding Chespin in the wild, like the other Kalos starters, is locked to the Indigo Disk DLC. If you want to be able to go to Terarium/Blueberry Academy, you will need to complete the following:
- "Path of Legends"
- "Starfall Street"
- "Victory Road"
- * "The Way Home"
- Kitakami (Teal Mask) Story/defeat Kieran
* Indigo Disk's Terarium unlocks after completing the three main story quests. However, if you haven't started the postgame, you will be locked off from story-related events in the DLC. This means you won't be able to go to the League Club, which you will need if you want Chespin and other starter Pokemon. So, make sure you complete "The Way Home" as well.
You can find Chespin in Chargestone Cavern, but only if you've contributed 3000BP to the Terarium Club for the Canyon Biome. Blueberry Points, or BP for short, are a type of currency that you gain from completing Blueberry Quests (BBQs). Since BBQs give out small BP for beginner quests, it may take you some time before you can farm up to 3000BP. You'll also need to set aside 150BP to take on the Elite Four in Indigo Disk if you have not yet completed the Indigo Disk's story.
Once you have enough, you can do the following:
- Go to Blueberry Academy Entrance, then choose the League Club at the gates near the desk.
- Go to the computer in the League Club, and select Contribute BP.
- Scroll down to the Terarium Club: Boost biodiversity in the Canyon Biome! For 3000BP.
After contributing the required amount of BP, go to Chargestone Cavern to look for Chespin. You can enter Chargestone Cavern by following the path southwest of Central Plaza, or south from the Polar Outdoor Classroom 1 in the Polar Biome. You can start by looking near the Chargestone Cavern fast-travel point (if you've discovered it).
Evolving Chespin
Chespin evolves into Quilladin at level 16, and Quilladin evolves into Chesnaught at level 36. The Chespin caught in Terarium will be way above their evolution level. To trigger the evolutions, you'll need to level it up once as Chespin, then once more as Quilladin.
How to Get Chespin without Indigo Disk
Transfer & Trade
Those without the Indigo Disk DLC, or if you want to transfer without spending BP, can obtain Chespin and its evolutions through the following:
- Transferring from GO to HOME
- Trading
Catch Chespin in Pokemon GO (Transfer with Pokemon HOME)
Both Pokemon GO and Pokemon HOME are free to download. If players want to transfer Pokemon from GO to HOME, then they'll need to have HOME on their Nintendo Switch. They'll also need to link their HOME account on GO. This can be done by doing the following on Pokemon GO:
- Tap the Poke Ball icon on the main screen.
- Select the Settings icon in the top-right corner.
- Scroll down to Connected Devices and Services and select Pokemon HOME.
- Enter the Pokemon HOME account info to link it to GO.
If GO trianers are transferring, then they'll need to follow steps 1-3, then select Send Pokemon. As long as players have enough GO Transport Energy, they can send as many as they want. Each Pokemon have different levels of Transport Energy, so keep this in mind when selecting them.
Event Pokemon and Shadow Pokemon cannot be transferred to HOME. Some examples of Event Pokemon are the New Year's Pikachu and the Holiday Spheal.
Chespin tends to appear during Sunny Weather or Clear Weather. Players may have more luck finding a Chespin during the spring or summer than they would in the fall or winter. Sometimes Niantic hosts events called "Spotlight Hour," which is when a select species of Pokemon will appear more frequently in the wild - regardless of weather. This will make it easier to find Chespin, but only if it's been selected for the Spotlight Hour.
Scarlet/Violet players don't need to pay for the Pokemon HOME subscription just to use its basic features. However, they'll only have one Basic Box to store Pokemon into HOME.
- Once Chespin has been sent to HOME, open the HOME app on the Switch.
- Select the GO icon on the menu to receive Pokemon.
- Choose Pokemon, then select Scarlet (or Violet).
- Pick up Chespin with Y-button (or A-button) from the Basic Box, and move him to a free space in one of S/V's PC Boxes.
- Press + to Save and Exit.
Once players start up Scarlet/Violet, they can check their Boxes from the menu (X-button) and Chespin can be found wherever it was placed.
How to Get Spectrier in The Indigo Disk DLC (Pokemon Scarlet & Violet)
Spectrier is a Ghost-type Legendary that can be caught in The Indigo Disk DLC after getting a Spectrier Treat from Snacksworth.
Trade Pokemon
Another way to get a Chespin (or its evolutions) is through trading via the Poke Portal in Scarlet/Violet. In order to make a trade, players will need a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription. Players can get a 30-day pass for $3.99, a 3 months pass for $7.99, or an annual pass for $19.99. Once purchased, the Nintendo Switch Online Subscription will be set up for Auto-Renewal.
To disable Auto-Renewal:
- Go into the Nintendo EShop and select the User Icon at the top of the screen.
- Select Nintendo Switch Online.
- Choose the Terminate Automatic Renewal under Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership.
Here's how to trade in Scarlet/Violet:
- Start up Scarlet/Violet and pause the game with X-button.
- Turn on wireless connection by tapping L-button.
- Select Poke Portal, and choose Union Circle. Create/Form or Join a Group, then embark.
-
Once in the Union Circle, go back into the Poke Portal and choose Link Trade.
- By choosing Link Trade, players can either Begin Searching or Set Link Code. Link Codes are to be given if players know someone they specifically want to trade with in SV.
- Select a Pokemon to offer in the trade for the Chespin, Quilladin, or Chesnaught.
